Diverting a well channel? (new player question!)
« on: August 10, 2009, 10:55:37 pm »

Hey guys!  I'm a relatively new player to DF - I'm working on my second fortress, and so far nobody's starved or gone crazy.  I'm doing well!

I had a question, though.  Fairly early on, I built a tunnel leading from the nearby river to feed my well (full of deadly carp, unfortunately).  I'd like to build a chasm below the bridge by the front gate, but it seems my tunnel leads directly below the bridge and through the planned chasm area.  Is there a way I can divert this tunnel around the planned chasm, without losing any miners, and leaving the chasm bone dry?  A wet chasm makes item collection needlessly difficult.

The mighty fortress of Towermachine!

Also, I'd appreciate any comments - any grievous flaws in the layout / security that you can see?

Day 2?

Respect, you're doing great!

Try wiki: "dam" while you're waiting for more experience engineers to speak up.

I assume that by "chasm" you mean "dry moat"?  "Chasm" means something different within DF.

As for your plans, there isn't a floodgate placed anywhere in the water tunnel, is there?  You'll need that tunnel dry before you do your work, and if you don't have a floodgate there, you'll need to do a lot of pumping with screw pumps to get the water out of there.

Nope, didn't think to put in a floodgate, unfortunately.  Yeah, I'd like to put in a stone pit.

Shouldn't be too difficult to handle. Build a waterwheel and pump right at the river where the tunnel starts. Then pump out the first tile next to the river and send the water right back to the river. That will put a 'hole' in your water tunnel effectively stopping more flow from the river into your cistern.

Next you can dig out another cistern a z-level below the original one and drain the water into that. Once the water is all out of the original tunnel put a door or floodgate in there.

You can continue to feed your cistern from the river after that doing something like this:
Code: [Select]

Z0  - RRRdfttttttttttttwCCC
Z-1 -    uTTTTTTTTTTTTTTCCC

R = river
d = down ramp
u = up ramp
f = floodgate
w = wall
t = old tunnel
T = new tunnel
C = cistern (channel away the cistern floor on the first z-level to make a 2-deep cistern)

Hope that made some sort of sense, it's hard to diagram plans on the forum.

BTW, nice fort. But it's obvious you're a newb because you're only using one z-level! Think in 3D. ;)

Yhink in 3D. ;)

This.

One step up/down is the same as one step across a hall.  Fortresses should resemble borg-cubes for maximum efficiency.

(btw, don't worry - if you are here, you have already been assimilated.  And it was painless!)

Looking good, looking good (as a starting fort...hehe).

To add a tip, if I humbly may:

Are you playing with economy turned on or off? If on, those bedrooms, while lovely with statue, armour stand, weapon rack et al. will become hella expensive when the economy kicks in - I recommend making some 1x3 rooms, unadorned, with just a bed and a door, for those dwarves that won't be able to afford the smoothed, engraved, packed-full-of-goodness rooms you've made (which look ace, by the way).

Keep trooping!

It is a total pain in the butt, but you gotta do what you gotta do if you want that upright candy weapon.
