Project Underwater - Is it even possible?
« on: November 10, 2013, 06:02:07 am »

Hello, my fellow forumites! I've been running a succession game for a while (Dorfday - you might have seen it or even taken part in it), and recently I had an idea that may be interesting enough. i'm not sure if it is original, or someone has already done this (If so, you can give a link). Anyway, ladies and gentelmen, I present you... The Underwater.

Dwarves enjoy new ideas. They dig deeper into the earth, build huge towers and bridges... How about constructing a giant self-contained underwater city? Is it even posiible?
Can you farm on pelagic clay? Woun't the dome collapse when falling under the water? How will the migrants get inside? Will they?

I need your advice, guys. And your ideas.

I believe each and everyone of your dwarves is going to painfully die.

The cave in will be !!FUN!! though.

Dwarf Fortress doesn't mean to do it... I just can't behave sometimes so it has to correct me.
Wait, there's a player list?

not if the walls are cast out of obsidian

then only most of the dwarves will die at first

I tried constucting a small ship and sending it to the bottom. It fell to pieces as soon as it was down. All constructions seem to deconstruct dramatically when the cavern collapses. Funnily, all the bricks seem to be lying in the same order as they were placed before. Natural formations may do well, but I don't know if the cliffs can be generated over the ocean. Maybe obsidian will help.

Natural walls will fall and remain intact, but they won't respect things like room structure. The ceiling will just fall in and become part of the floor. You could cast an obsidian tower bit by bit and sink it into the sea then dig into it from above or below.

he went out for a sock,
his ass I won't bother to save.

I think this would be similar to my volcano base building strategy (that place was named Burnwards for a reason.) You can drain the ocean into an aquifer, controlled power is a key.

Step one set up base of operations, start churning out blocks.
Step two, build a pier and aqueduct which leads to an exposed aquifer.
Step three, pumps, gear assemblies, and windmills force water into aqueduct.
Step four, build down and pray.
