Using the ALT key in Ubuntu 13+

I know this is mostly a Ubuntu issue, but I figured I can't be the only one running Ubuntu 13.10 here and wanting to regain access to the ALT key for playing DF. All the information I have found by googling this topic has been vague and unhelpful. Are there any other Ubuntu users that can help me out?

I am running DF in the terminal itself.

If you're running DF in TEXT mode, then there is no way to input certain key combinations. I know of no way around this; it's a limitation of the ncurses library.

Of course, you could switch to a graphical mode, and then it won't be in the terminal.
