A couple of semi newb questions after some FUN!
« on: September 22, 2013, 11:43:44 pm »

Hi new member long time player off and on sense 2007.
I had a Fort that hit its 3rd year when i was suddenly besieged
by 2 groups of goblins at once. So here are my issues/questions:

1. Despite orders to not gather refuse outside my dwarfs
decide to march out and gather their dead friends clothes  anyways.
how do i stop this? Haven't messed with burrows yet.

2. I have a fairly good grasp on the military system .But some of
my marksdwarves would not grab their crossbows when they had
no reason to. I specifically told them what crossbows.
Reasons?

3. How do you find magma? I can never find any. Mostly dig and dig then hit
some giant cave network and stop because of !fun down in the caves.
I need some advice.

4. If i build a tower for my archers with all provisiones in it.
how do i keep them in there and not wandering around and if
i fortified the walls on multiple levels can they still shoot down?

5. Final question, are doors and walls still indestructible by invaders?

Thankyou for reading, and for any help you can offer. sorry if some of
these questions have already been answered. and btw the two groups
of goblins eventually left after killing 15 civs trying to gather bullshit...fml. :)

1. I'm not too sure of this myself, but you may be able to forbid death items in the (f)orbid section of the (o)rders menu.

2. When you first assemble the military, do you set them to active right away? They seem to have a better time of equipping themselves when they are on active duty.

3. The magma sea is the fourth cavern, in a way. It's found below the third cavern layer. Don't worry about the clowns, if magma is all you're after.

4. Set a station order within the tower. Or use burrows. You can also make this a part of their military schedule, by setting them to patrol the tower burrow.

To get a dwarf to fire out of a fortification, they need to be standing right next to it, and be able to path to their target. Elite marksdwarves can fire through a fortification without having to be right next to it.

5. Walls are indestructible, but doors are not. Though artifact doors won't be destroyed, they will be deconstructed instead.

1. Thanks, this seems like it will fix my problem. it's late
so I'll test it tomorrow.

2. I have 2 squads one active when the other is inactive.
so odds are one group starts inactive. Ill also test it tomorrow.

3. Ok, as long as i make a secure mineshaft no !FUN! should happen.
still not sure what "clowns" are.

4. Ok that saves me a lot of stress later.

5. Good to know. so adamatine walls are as strong as normal stone walls?

Thanks for quick reply, much appreciated.

1. Make a civilian alert burrow, that'll keep your civilians from trying to grab stuff.

5. Walls are indestructible, but doors are not. Though artifact doors won't be destroyed, they will be deconstructed instead.

Erm, I had an artifact door which ended up getting mobbed on by demons but it didn't get deconstructed, but yes artifact doors can't be destroyed.

Adamantine walls are as strong as soap walls. Even walls made of wood are magma safe.

As are, ironicly enough, walls constructed from ice boulders if you manage to finish construction before the ice melts.

It seems like a simple mechanic to fix that would alter gameplay drastically.
but i know nothing about coding.

They do not need to have a path to their target.  They simply need to be next to the fortifications.  This myth seems to be everywhere lately for some reason.  You can build a tower, seal the markdwarves in, station them next to a 1 wide walkway next to fortifications and they will happily bolt the heck out of whatever walks into range.

3. You don't have to engage with any "trouble" in the caves if you don't want to. Just seal it off until you are ready (a constructed wall or floor will prevent any monsters to come through.

Besides the magma sea there are often magma bubbles or pools of magma which may come up half the way to the surface. These are easier to use, but you wouldn't find them everywhere.

1. Clothes aren't "refuse," is the problem.

2. Are any of those dwarves miners, hunters or woodcutters? Those jobs come with their own "uniform" that interferes with military equipment.

3. Keep digging.

4. I'd suggest putting all their supplies, provisions and leisure areas in the tower. Barracks for training and sleeping, stocked dining room, and all necessary equipment. Then burrow them in to keep them from lounging too much in the legendary dining hall across the fort.

5. Walls are indestructible: doors are not.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

It's an issue of how you assign them. If you assign them to station, they'll happily pincushion whatever they can see. But if you assign them to kill (X), they'll seek out a place where they have a path to their target, and go hang out in the dining room if they can't find one.
