Why are some people listed as "escaped lunatic" and others not?

You get the title of Bay Watcher once you reach a certain number of posts - 10 I think.
Escaped Lunatic is the default title, for under that post count.
There are a few other titles given to the forum titans.

To be exact, Toady One has "The Great", ThreeToe "The Natural" and Baughn "The Haruhiist".

Also, I found a bay watcher with 9 posts.

The reason behind doing this is so that you can easily see anyone new. This helps with spambots that seem like they're adding to a conversation and posting a link. Their "Escaped Lunatic" label will clue other posters in that they probably aren't legit and should be cautious. There are probably other reasons, though.
