Lashers are very overpowered because their weapons are being treated as rigid rods of metal like swords, and have an extremely low contact area and a lot of force behind an attack, so they can smash through just about anything. There's no real defense against them except shields and shield skill, which you should definitely invest in, as well as dodge.

Outrunning them is going to be your best bet, though. When you go to make a new character, spend attribute points in strength and agility first. Those two govern how quickly you move. Average speed for humans is about 945 or something. If you can run 1250 or so you'll be able to outrun most opponents. I'd suggest that if you're trying to ditch someone, ditch most of your armor and your pack, first. If you find a pool to jump into and they're more than a few squares behind you, you should be able to use the cover from the ledge of the pool to start sneaking. Then exit the opposite side of the pool (they'll be running up to the side you just jumped into because that's where they last saw you) and you can sneak back to where you left your gear and pick it up, and fast travel away safely.

If you swim in a river that doesn't freeze over at night (check first) you'll build up your strength and agility, which will hopefully translate to increasing your running speed on land. An adventurer with 1400 speed is probably not going to meet many opponents they can't outrun, but if you didn't start out well above 1000 you might not reach this before your attributes max out. Keep in mind that speed also governs how often you can attack an opponent, so being faster than them means you will have more chances to smack them before they can smack you.

I missed your post earlier, but I seem to have followed pretty much everything you suggested anyway except for swimming around in a river to improve skills. Is "Superhuman" the best rating I can have in a stat? I know the actual values are different, but how do I know when I've maxed out?

I returned to the site of my previous adventurer's death and was shocked to find that he had somehow become a zombie. It was actually pretty scary, he cleaved through my companions like paper but I got a lucky strike in and beheaded him. Got all of my gear back, but I lost all my money when I threw it at some bandits that were chasing me later. A sack bulging with gold coins hits pretty hard and makes you lighter to boot!

My current goal is to storm the necromancer tower nearby, which I assume somehow revived my previous adventurer. Based on my preliminary scouting (read: running in terror from the army of zombies that came out of it) I think I will need a much larger group of companions.

Sneaking is definitely important for raiding a tower. There's another trick that makes it stupidly easy, but I won't tell you unless you really want to know :)

I don't think that companions will help you much with tower. They usually run straight into it and get eaten. And resurrected. Also, necromancers can revive their troops faster then you kill them or hack into submission. Once tried to fight zombies with decent-skilled, iron-clad army and was beaten (too many losses). So, better solo this tower (maybe with a few archers for company). With decent speed and some running it is possible to lure zombies away from their masters.

BTW, the most dangerous part of a zombie is it's head. Latches on and never lets you go. Secondly - fingers. Scratch attacks are ridiculous - they fracture bones through armor and easily make their way to the brain.

I'm back with news from the tower!
...I wish I had read these replies beforehand.

I approached it from the north, sneaking along the cliffs above the tower with an entourage of 16 soldiers. As I approached the sunken entrance to the tower, I got extremely lucky. The "necromancer boss" was standing just out front of the door! My archers and crossbowmen launched a barrage at him, and between the half dozen bolts and arrows his legs were immobilized. I quickly charged down the hill and decapitated him, only to be rushed by dozens of zombies! However, without their necromancer, they weren't unstoppable. The battle raged for dozens of turns, but in the end all of the zombies that came out of the tower had been struck down. I had lost 6 companions, and the remaining 10 were in various states of health, but the day was won.

Or so I thought. As I stepped foot inside the entryway of the tower, the remaining dozen or more zombies that hadn't sallied forth charged me. My companions rushed to my aid, and the resultant battle spanned the nearby mountain slopes, with many zombies and a few companions plummeting to untimely deaths. Most of the zombies were named this time. I don't know if that makes them stronger or not, but they certainly did a lot more damage. In the end, all of my companions were slain and I had to kill the last six or seven zombies myself.

With the cliffs coated in blood and gore, and the tower no longer spewing undead monstrosities, I checked the corpse of the necromancer. He was carrying an ever-so-useful treatise on another book about something. Whatever it was, it didn't appear that I could control the dead after reading it, so I resolved to go on. After all, there were no zombies left. It should be a simple matter to enter the tower and find what I seek! There was another small room attached to the back of the first, so it was there that I would search.

As I entered the doorway to the second room, countless zombies charged en masse and tore me to shreds.

My new adventurer has just set out from the capital (very near the tower) and will hopefully reclaim what was lost with his retinue of 3 soldiers. After all, the necromancer is dead. How hard can it be?

Edit: Do zombies 'respawn' or something? I've come back to the tower at least 5 times with fresh meatshields soldiers and it seems like there's always more zombies than before. The ones that were named are still dead, including the necromancer, but others keep coming...

Well, aside from necromancers being able to re-raise anything that was once a part of living matter (even silly things like hair), I've found that those towers tend to be stuffed with an incredulous amount of zombies.

I've got a couple of spoilers that you shouldn't read unless you, well, want parts of the game spoiled.

(This one is that secret I mentioned but didn't reveal, because I forgot about spoiler tags :P)

I haven't looked at those spoilers yet but I made it pretty deep in on my last attempt. I went in solo this time after dumping all of my non-combat gear. With the greater speed I was able to cleave my way through them like crazy, but they just kept coming. I cleared out the first two rooms, as well as the first room on the second floor, but the third floor seems to have had more than the previous floors combined. They got some lucky hits in and broke both of my legs, and I crawled back out to the cliffs killing more as I went. Eventually they overwhelmed me and clawed me to death, but it was great fun. I went from proficient to master in swordsmanship, and I think I was almost legendary in fighting by the time I died.

For now, I think I'll go back to becoming a vampire and then attack the tower. The place is just too full, I find it hard to imagine even some super character could kill them all without taking a random crippling blow.

To be honest, I've only ever used the "Get Past Zombies Easily" trick to raid towers, I have yet to actually tackle it "fairly". Good luck on your continuing trials!

Posting one last time to say I conquered the tower. It took 90 minutes of straight combat to clear through all of the zombies, and a lot of attention to detail, but nothing remains. I have taken a slab from the tower and read it, evidently I can raise the dead now. I went from talented to legendary in most of my fighting skills from the endeavor.

Edit: Raised my kills to count them, 328. And now I'm going to raise the body parts as well, and go take on this dragon!

I find zombies to be pathetically easy to be personal. Just take advantage of their incredibly slow speed and you can kill any zombie in a few hits.

Back with another question. I abandoned my 500 zombie army when I reached the dragon lair, and killed it in an epic duel that cost me my teeth and very nearly my arm. It's now my only minion.

Can anyone help me figure out how to keep him while still interacting with towns? I found out the hard way that zombies attack villagers which turns factions against me. I've got a dozen or so kills to claim credit for, but I've been staying away from my homeland to prevent my army of zombies from antogonizing them.

I'd like to return to society, but also have this dragon corpse available when I'm ready for combat. I'm fairly certain carrying it is a bad idea, not to mention I'd have to strike it down over and over to enter towns and such.

Also how do I get it across rivers? I'd lose 50 zombies every time I crossed one before. It seems to cross rivers just fine, thankfully.

Edit: I lost the dragon in the mountains when it went bounding off after mountain goats. Still, I'd like an answer so I know what to do if the situation ever arises again.

There is definitely a tipping point in terms of strength, where you go from a 50/50 chance of dying each fight to becoming an unstoppable god of death. Max out your dodge and shield skills before you go adventuring, by training on a rabbit or a crab or some other small harmless critter.

Sneak in every engagement, don't be afraid of running away if you are outnumbered. You can sneak and throw rocks to whittle groups down if need be.

Sadly, there is no method of bringing zombies with you everywhere.

You already mentioned the only method - kill and revive. You can carry it around by throwing. Still, not the best option. Also, Deon's Genesis mod has some companion interactions that can solve the problem without killing ("wait" option). But then you must leave zombies at some site or they will wander away.

Rivers are not a problem, if you swim and start fast-traveling as soon as you can.
