So it just slows down the process, but they can't be saved by doctors?

If you manage to put the fire out and get to them in time, maybe, but not even dwarves in DF have the technology or techniques to deal with third degree burns over very large areas.

You're more likely to get a !!!doctor!!! than actually saving the dwarf, lol.

Just got another fire-spitting FB, and managed to deal with it quickly, on a somewhat rocky ground, it seems to me that being surrounded by fire is more dangerous than being on fire.

As aflame dwarves cooled off quite quickly without intervention, one bled out after it, another survived, her head fat is gone, her upper body was burnt a bit as it was bleeding, and her lower body shows some damage too but only in a a color marked way, she didn't care about going to the hospital.
So it's up to Armok if they survive.

The other dwarf who wasn't on fire, but was surrounded by it, burnt to crisp.
