Mac Users: Is it more stable to play with Wine?
« on: August 31, 2013, 06:12:06 am »

After yet another crash last night on Fortress mode (glad I have an auto-save per season), and with Adventurer Mode being nigh unplayable for me (entering new villages crashes about 20% of the time), I was wondering what you other Mac guys do to have a (more) stable experience?

Is running the Windows version through Wine more stable? Should I use a mod instead, would DFHack make things more stable perhaps?

BTW, the crashes I get on Mac are an empty white NSAlert box popping up and the terminal always says

"NSAlert is being used from a background thread, which is not safe.  This is probably going to crash sometimes. Break on void _NSAlertWarnUnsafeBackgroundThreadUsage() to debug.  This will be logged only once.  This may break in the future."

Use the MacNewbie app. It's pretty much a wine version but with way easier customisation and settings fiddling, which is very useful. Plus addons and so on and so forth.

I use wine and it's never crashed for me. Lags a bit more than when I play on my bootcamp partition, but acceptable.

There may be instructions on the wiki, but if not, see the bottom of this thread.

I've never had any major problems running on mac (Snow leopard, 10.6.8) other than the very rare crash or one case when a world seemingly became corrupted and wouldn't let me scroll past a certain point when choosing my origin civ in adventure mode on that one world.
FPS-wise it holds up fairly well, but occasionally seems to dip for no reason every once in a while during adventure mode.

The only problem I've run into consistently is when I tried to use the Masterwork DF mod. After genning a world it would simply crash whenever I tried to create an adventurer or move to a different site using fast travel mode as an adventurer. I never ended up trying fortress mode.

If you're running lion or mountain lion I have heard that there are quite a few problems running DF on that, but I haven't had any experience with it.

I wouldn't recommend using wine to run dwarf fortress, that's the worst you can do performancewise, and DF can crash on windows too. If you really want to use the windows package then use bootcamp to set up a windows installation and use Expanded LNP.

Or there's the updated MacNewbie pack with dfhack r3 bugfixes, UI additions and utilities. I maintain this for a reason. :) Using it on 10.7.5, and I don't see those various problems.

RE: Masterwork crash: if you see it with MW 3.+, then I think the crash is due to the add-spatter plugin. Delete it from Dwarf Fortress/hacks/plugins and you can play with the mod, although rune smithing and poison coating won't work.
