Can't Find Coal

I cant find a source of coal anywhere- I've dug down five levels and dug out massive 'H' shapes on each one but still no sign.

I also cant find any magma...

How deep do you normally have to dig before you find this stuff?

Neither is guaranteed on any map. The Regional Prospector can be used to check if a site has magma before you embark there.

As for coal, your best bet is to look in Sedimentary stone layers (Sandstone, Siltstone, Mudstone, Shale, Claystone, Rock Salt, Limestone, Conglomerate, Dolomite, Flint, Chert, or Chalk). I'm not sure if they appear in other stone types. If you don't have any of these, you can also get Charcoal from trees.
