I heard somewhere that Artifacts don't melt in lava.  Is this true?

I ask because my dwarves make the STRANGEST things.  One just made a silver (Galena, Cassiterite, and Wood) floodgate named Broiledscreams and I thought with a name like that it'd be perfect in a lava trap, once the dorf drops it.
But I don't want it getting nuked by lava..

Ok, stone floodgates are not destroyed by magma, and I don't think metal ones are either. HOWEVER, magma men will pop out and start bashing down buildings, so that could be an obvious problem.
