What is better, an artifact iron mace, or a masterwork silver one?

Unless you're using it against a werebeast that is weak to silver, even a masterwork iron mace would be better than the silver.

Material is much more important.

Silver only makes crappy edged weapons, for blunt weapons it is far superior to iron. Silver is the densest standard weapon material in the game.

Oh I see. Must have been thinking of the materials softness.

Though an artifact lead or platnium mace would be even better.

Yep, but sadly they are quite rare.

Material beats quality, but in this case silver is the superior metal anyway.

I leave one tile stockpiles, no bins, for steel near each forge. Mooding dwarfs take it because it's nearest. Present fortress now boasts an artifact steel sword and a mace...but with quite a few artifact steel earrings, bracelets and other crap.

Earlier on a dwarf produced a gold artifact shield. At the moment it's in storage because it is heavier than steel by almost double (25 vs 15, I think) and I'm concerned this may cause a fatal encumbrance to whichever hero gets to carry it. However, it would go well with the current theme of gold-studded, masterwork steel armour. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

Artifact because they'll hit more often, iron and silver doesn't differ enough in density to think too hard about. Silver would be optiminal if you're hitting almost as well.

Masterwork vs artifact doesn't make much of a difference in practice in fortress mode, material matters more. Still any weapon grade metal, except bluemetal, works perfectly well for blunt weapons.

I'd use that shield for whomever is considered the royal guard or the defender of fortress. It'll be a bit encumbering, but themetic importance is good justification :D

Is the artifact iron mace useless as a weapon?

would that entail putting it in a place you can remember then forbidding it?

Nope, it's pretty good actually.

I can certainly lay cursor to it any time. Due to the stockpile management regime currently in operation, it is enjoying pride of place in the, ah, scrap pile.

Have an artifact steel mace in the present fort. Doesn't notch up many kills, but reading the combat reports, I would say that it's certainly been instrumental in disabling the more aggressive enemy combatants and titans.
