Macro tutorial?

I managed to use ctrl r & p in game to designate a stairwell down several z's ... but I don't like to queue up too much digging at once so I'd rather do a couple and add more later ... as far as I can tell this method does not allow saving the macro and labeling it for later use.  (ctrl s opens an input field but I don't know what I'm doing there
