Does water flood through diagonals?

Can water go through diagonals?

Like # = rock and ~ = water and X is where I DON'T want the water

Nope! Your precious things in the X squares are completely safe. I had the same thing exactly happen to me. I wondered about it too, but the floodwaters were held at bay.

Normally I would give it a go but I was finally making progress in the game and didn't want my precious farm land fudged up.
