You apparently unforbade all other armor pieces before it worked since I just had three weaker pieces accessible originally. I wanted to find out whether I could "guide" my dwarves to equip the exact armor pieces I want them to wear.

Thanks to the help of everyone I managed to equip all of my dwarves with helms and gauntlets. But then the next strange thing happened. After they picked up their armor everything was fine for a couple of days and then some of them brought armor pieces back to the stockpile and randomly picked up other pieces here and there. I know that they automatically try to upgrade their armor and that would be fine with me. But that's not really the case since some of them dropped helm and gauntlets and just picked up another helm and no gauntlets at all. The whole process seems to be rather erratic and random...
I tried to forbid all other armor pieces once they were all fully equipped but some still bring back their armor after a couple of days although there are no upgrades available. And they don't seem to pick up those pieces once they dropped them, even after some time went by. They don't seem to know what they want.
