I've been wanting to learn how to use the minecarts, but I've been having trouble finding the minecart science threads. Anyone care to give me a link?

to make sure you have the groundwork set up right.

For the threads on the forum, the best approach would be to use the search function. The biggest repository of minecart research is probably the "How does Minecart?" thread. The thread is no longer active, so asking questions in there wouldn't be a good idea. Furthermore, it's a very long, rambling and highly disorganised thread; and what's reported there is not guaranteed to be accurate.

Most other minecart knowledge threads are rather specific in their outlook - e.g., if you don't care about ballistic or otherwise launched minecarts, this detailed and informative thread would be largely useless.
