I want to test the effects of various things on future events, (butterfly effect stuff) so I want to "savescum" a test fortress back to two years ago. It is set to autosave every spring, so where do I find the save from two years back? Is this even possible, or does the save file get overwritten every time you save?

before loading a save copy the save folder for the region you want to scum

Unless you're doing seasonal saves (I assume you're using LNP) you can't scum back that far.

There are two ways to scum.  First is to take a copy of your region folder in the data/save directories and just leave it off to the side.  Second is to allow for seasonal saves like above.  I don't like the seasonal saves, digging through the list gets on my nerves when I'm trying to remember the active one for the fort.  I usually will save fort, let it save the fort down, copy the folder, and then restart the main region before I go do something like pressure test the magma pump stack that's warming the water in the dining room.

Ok. Thanks for the help, but as I have gone past the time when I want to scum back to, without copying out its save, it is now impossible to get back to?

Correct.  The save itself is an ironman save.

if you do not use dfhacks die command and you o not manually back up yor region folders you are stuck with what ever consequences that result of yup are your dwarves' decisions.
