Pump system.
« on: July 30, 2013, 09:03:25 am »

So i'm starting to construct pump system using this lay out: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/File:Pumpstack.gif

But it seems i can't build over channels. So few questions
1. Do screwpumps automatically channel power to lower pumps?
2. Do you need channels for this to happen?
3 If you do how do you construct them? (i get red X when i try to build pump over channel)

1. Pump powers everything N/S/E/W and above and below of it's tiles.

2. For powering pumps above and below, yes

3. Build from bottom up ( at least that's what I does, I've heard about being able to build top-down but never tried it ), the problem might be you didn't finished building it first before designating the next one? Gears can support pumps if you're using it at bottom, but if it's turned off through a lever, it won't support anything.

You can't start building them from the middle/without support, you'll get a red X that way. Start from the bottom or the top, build a supporting mechanism/axle to support your first pump, and then it will let you build the other pumps on a channel above/below.
If you don't channel first they won't be able to transfer power.

Ah thx... so foolish of me.

So water wheel will work like this. I have water flowing in floor 1 i have water wheel over it at floor 2

I have gear assembly next to water wheel at floor 2. I have channel at floor 3, and gear assembly on top of it. -> then ill transfer power across floor 3 to gear assembly which is on top of my top most pump.

Well asumeing you have the pumpstack built right that should let power flow.  Although I'm not sure why your moveing power up to F3 and then back down.   I normaly would just cut a path to the stack on F2 and direct connect it with an axle.   Are you doing this to avoid the possibility of leakage?

You can power pumps from side? I just assumed you can't power them anywhere else than top.

Yep, you can power pumps from all sides. I don't know how connecting in front or behind it affects fluid flow, though.

fluid flows around axles and gear assemblies so it shouldn't block flow.  However I wouldnt recomend runing power in from the output side of a pump stack movin magma unless you are geting it there via magma safe materials, that and it makes leakage a problem unless comeing in from above.   Personaly I just hook power into the pathable tile (where a dwarf stands to manualy pump)  No issues with leaks that way and you probably have an avalible path to it anyway from construction and the gears/axles dont block future dwarf pathing either.
