construction problems
« on: March 25, 2007, 06:54:00 am »

I should start by telling you all that this is my first-ever time on DF mode, so sorry if I ask any stupid questions. Anyway, my problem is that my dwarves are starting to get hungry, I've got plenty of fish, however, when I construct a fishery so that they can eat the fish, they don't do anything, no one starts constructing it. I've set some people to fish cleaning, but they still don't do anything, I've got all the resources I need, and they do everything except build the damn thing. If this keeps up, my dwarves are all going to end up dead of starvation. Help please.

Check:
Inspect the construction site, using [q]. The site will state what labor is needed for the construction while it isn't finished.

You did that.

Check:
Monitor the jobs queue using [j], and see whether there is an entry Construct building ... [name] ... Fishery

While [name] is inactive, the construction order doesn't get executed--yet.

Check:
make sure at least one of your dwarfs has the [fishing] or [fish cleaning] labor set.

You did that.

If the job doesn't start even after a minute or so, you may remove all other labor from the dwarf with the appropriate labor. It may take a little patience after that, but construction should start then.

In the meantime, you could set one or two others to [plant gathering], and designate some bushes for gathering [d]-[p] to provide some food.

Two extra tips:
I) Do not set the job as "fishing", but set it as "fish cleaning". This is because a dwarf with "fishing" will often rather go fish than build the fishery.
II) If you try taking a dwarf and disabling every task but "fish cleaning" on him, and he still doesn't work, try drafting and then undrafting him to/from the military. (some would consider that an exploit in some cases)

Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

An exploit? Why that?

OK, it turned out the reason no one was building the fishery was because no one had fish cleaning on in labour. Problem solved, thanks. However, one more thing. This isn't so much a problem as a question. How do you view combat in fortress mode, I can see wounds but nothing else combat related. i know it's not needed to be able to play, but I like viewing the combat in DF.

It forces a re-evaluation of the dwarf's jobs and allows the player to control the dwarves beyond free will.

However, it has a penalty associated with it -- dwarves get unhappy when they're drafted -- so I don't think of it as an exploit.

How can that be considered an exploit? Your dwarves are apparently so stupid that they're perfectly content to build a statue on top of themselves and then lie there for the rest of their (short) lives, without your help. Besides, my proud communist dwarves expect the iron fist of the Party to keep them in line.

Because it also works on dwarves "on break".

re: viewing combat

the only way I know is to watch the wounds build up between the participants. there isn't even a "zoom to combat" command (yet?), so sometimes I go to to the nit list, scroll to the "hostile" ratman and view [c]reature to zoom to that location.

for larger battles, pause the action, then hit "." to increment the time by one "frame" so that you can "see" the goblins get internal injuries from your elite speardwarves.
