Water trouble!
« on: October 29, 2007, 07:37:00 pm »

My first two forts I was forced to abandon because there was simply no water to be found.

I then created a fortress with 7 miners and had them dig for the last hour. I honeycombed the ground 10 layers down and have found no water (though I now have a good idea on what levels different ores are found).

The only maps that seem to have water are those with rivers and water tables, but I have no idea how to get through the water tables! Anyone figure this stuff out yet?

uhm think about it. Look at where you are starting.  Start near a river and you'll be fine for water, just like life...go dig a well in arizona sometime... (I started in a forest with a river on the edge of my playable selection, works great so far)

I know that.

I'm saying if you don't start in an area with water on the surface, you pretty much can't have a fortress.

I was under the assumption that there were cave rivers underground still and there don't seem to be.

when you pick a map, look at the stone thing to the side. sometimes it will have a water symbol next to one (or more) of the types. That means (I think) that there is water at that level.

I'm not 100% sure though, I've not tested it much so far.

I believe that symbol means there is an aquifer at that area.  Not entirely sure what that means, but if you start in an area with that symbol it gives you a warning about starting in an area with an aquifer.

An aquifer is a layer of underground water. When you try to dig past that you'll get a warning saying your dwarf stopped because the ground was wet. If you try to dig through the aquifer you will pretty much drown, I'd imagine, which makes getting past that level fairly difficult.

I hope there are no ways to dig under watertable, because it is difficult even with modern technology. The only way is to insulate the corridor (like covering all the wall with cement) and/or pumping constantly...

I started near a river and lakes and could not dig below a certain level of wet sand. I had only found sand and stuff, not rock. Then i found a large piece of rock (many Z levels) and dug in the middle of it and could go past the wet sand level i could not dig before. 3 or so levels below it i could dig normally. Kinda cool, actually.

I tried to get past the aquifer by creating a layer of obsidian with magma, but that doesn't seem to work. Even if a aquifer tile is surrounded on all sides with obsidian, the water will rise.
