OK I have this one area in a world I created named steeldance.

I can run it in one instance and start up another in the same world.  What I want to do is to build a new fortress from scratch in that same area with the backup I made of the world before I started the fort I have there.

How can I find the starting spot that steeldance was at so I can start there again?

I haven't implemented anything that lets you get at it immediately -- for now you can abandon, and then do Play Now! in adventure mode.  If you start in the right fortress (you can either walk down and check, or if it was your only one you're there), you can walk off the top and see where you are on the travel map.  If the mountains are against the forest or hills you might need to walk around a little to get enough of the mountain mapped to match it to the starting location maps.

I want to make another fortress at steeldance...

so I have to adventure around to find where steeldance is?

Use a copy your old world, the one with a running Steeldances, if you have it.  Abandon Steeldances, then do what I said.  If you don't have a copy with Steeldances running, you won't be able to locate it again.

I went to the same spot, I am 99% sure, but it's a different name... is this correct?

The name is random.  It's the fort itself being names, not the location.  You'll be able to choose the name at some point.
