Forcing broker to trade (Ranting)

If this seems a little rantish, it's because I'm fairly ticked off.

Ok, so I had a vile force of darkness that slaughtered my nobles, including the old broker.

New guy is chosen at random, a cook.  Fikod somethingorother.

Anyway, merchants show up directly after seige.  Understandably, the new broker is busy hauling goblin crap around.  Ok, so no more hauling.  He promptly goes to sleep.  I deconstruct his bed, and turn off all labors but cooking.  I suspend all meal cooking.

Ok, says he, I'm going to go remove some construction.  I disable all construction removal that I have zoned.  Ok, time to go BRING ITEMS TO SHOPS AND NOT STOP FOR ANYTHING FOR TWO MONTHS UNTIL THE MERCHANTS LEAVE.

Great, now I have ~100 tantrumming dwarves and no booze because this jackass wouldn't trade.

Is there any way to actually completely and without any dawdling force the broker to go to the damn depot?

in a pinch you can always "anyone can trade", amirite?

also you can select a rested dwarf with no job to be the broker for the time being, i guess.

thats all i could think of right now.

My current broker has done his trading, but he really, really doesn't want to meet with the human guild liaison. As noted, he'll gladly do any deconstruction tasks, and I have a lot of those as I need to rebuild my pumping tower after the trolls broke the bottom pump (which was supporting all the others...sigh). He also likes to harvest crops. Both of those I can control.

What I can't control is his desire to replace his current outfit one...item...at...a...time. He keeps alternating between Store Owned Item, Pickup Equipment, and Attend Meeting, the last of which he always cancels as soon as the liaison gets into range.

I find that brokers and mayors ALWAYS find something to do rather than attend meetings. It's really their lowest priority.
Even when turning off every labor they'll still find silly random things to do rather than attend the meeting.

Having deconstruction tasks makes sure he'll gladly finish every damn single one of those before even beginning to accept the existence of a Liason.

Best thing you can do is turn all the labors off, cancel all deconstruct tasks and cross your fingers that he'll actually feel bothered to start the meeting.
In your case.. it seems he didn't.

I guess dwarves REALLY don't like talking when there's work to be done.

... and if there's no work to be done they'll improvise, or at least act like they're busy anyway.

I had this problem earlier, rather than set anyone to trade, due to my broker having the highest social and appraisal so I figured he'd be best, I drafted him then turned off military.

I totally sympathise. Regularly on the arrival of my first caravan, quite important for the fledgling fortress, my designated trader will, in any order... Drink, Sleep, Eat, Go on a break, etc, until the caravan leaves.

I give him a few minutes to sort his shit out, and if he doesn't cooperate I pull the trading depot down around the traders ears. Cheaty I know, but I get all my much needed goods and it makes me feel lots better after the anguish of watching my trader diddle about.

I just have a single dwarf with the appraisal skill so that I can see the wealth of my fort and actually trade efficiently. When push comes to shove, the designated broker is ALWAYS busy. I always just end up leaving it to "Anyone Can Trade".

It's interesting to see a fort full of dwarves who all have Novice-level or higher trade-related skills.

When it comes to elves, I just don't bother and seize all of their stuff. They don't seem to care very much as I've done it ten years in a row. They keep coming and coming.

while having a designated trader is important in the beginning... it becomes less so when you produce so many goods that you have excess.  AFTER buying out a caravan.

One tactic, in a pinch, as noted is to set anyone to trade... do so only to get precisely what it is you need in that pinch (metal, food, booze, fey mood request, etc.)... then set trade back to broker only.  Consider it a happy medium.

In any event, some things like wood, stone/bauxite, most food and booze are relatively cheap.  I recommend doing several small trades rather than one big one:
1) improves negiotiation skill
2) makes it more unlikely that the trader thinks you are yanking him around causing him to
3) leave and prevent you from getting at least some of what you need.

As for meeting with liasons... I dunno, my mayor is a miner/engraver/etc ... I turn off everything but healthcare and tell him to trade... after I stop request for trader, he usually runs back inside to conduct meeting (occasionally runs right back out to grab food/drink).

What i suggest is, set a small food and drink stockpile in your mayor/meetingperson's residence... when he gets there, lock the door.  Preferably with the liason inside with them, but otherwise, they just talk through the door and it's not a problem.  Prevents your mayor from running about willy nilly doing random tasks, but hopefully also prevents dehydration and starvation (make sure you have a small stock of food and booze, and not just one or the other; hunting for vermin cancels everything).

warning #1: don't forget to unlock the door =p
warning #2: do NOT unlock the door until the AFTER the liason starts to leave... there is about a 2-5 second pause after the final dialogue screen before the meeting actually ends.  If you open the door too early, your mayor might start running amok and prevent the meeting from ending... not good.

Funny but I have yet to run into this problem. Granted my oldest fort so far has only hit three years. What I do is just set aside one of my first seven dwarves as a social skills/appraiser/record keeper. I've yet to have a real issue with him getting to the depot on time. Even when he does sleep/eat while the merchants are here. Then again maybe I've just been lucky so far.

This was the human guild liaison, who certainly did meet with my broker. The dwarven liaison left in a huff as soon as he realized that my mayor had died while heroically charging the goblin hordes (no big loss; a smart mayor would've hung back with the rest of his mates and taken them on as a group).

Perhaps if you'd read my post more thoroughly you might have noticed that I'd said that my broker kept alternating between Hold Meeting, Store Owned Item, and Pickup Equipment.

guild liason is easy. He will meet with your dwarf in a bedroom if he has no office, or an office if he has one. Build your dwarf an office with lockable doors. Get him and the liason into the office (draft if you have to). Lock the door. Let the meeting go. Voila.

Trade depot can be handled the same way if you are really that frustrated. Just make it closeable with drawbridges or whatever, and lock your trader in there.

These solutions will save you so many headaches it is not even funny.
