Will I be able to build a dwarf fort UNDER a goblin fort
« on: October 23, 2007, 08:52:00 pm »

*Dwarves arrive at the site, fires from a golbin settlement visable in the distance*
"Start digging down. NOW."
*Dwarves make enough room for a stockpile, bring everything down from the wagons, and rewall the entrance.
"Our first wave of immigrants should be interesting."

Then, the dwarves die due to suffocation...

Oh, I'm sure they left air holes in the rewalling job...

My style would be to cut a hole in the ceiling for air, but build a deep pit trap under it with the bottom rigged up with weapon traps so anyone who thought to drop down would find they're about to have a very bad day.

they could be prisoners of the goblins escaped and planning to slowly destroy the fort from inside it's walls. using what few seeds or livestock they stole before escaping and collapsing a tunnel behind them.

secret doors! traps to kill goblin miners for their picks! sabotage the goblin farms by undermining their river!

that could be awesome!

Kidnap the Goblin children! See how they like it.  What I would like to see are spy dwarves or thief dwarves who sneak and steal things, or assassinate the Goblin mayor.  Using an option "Send on spy mission."  Likewise, it would be entertaining to dig your fortress and come across a secret goblin or kobold hideout filled with stolen loot.

I can see it this way, the king sends a team of seven dwarven commandos to dig near a Goblin fortress to infiltrate, sabotage, and gather intelligence so they can invade it later.

Mine out everything below their fortress exept for 1 support. Then mine behind all their walls. The fort is now floating in the air. Laught at them while you fill the pit with lava.

Pull the lever.

It'd need a lot more than one support to hold all of it up, but yeah that could work.

Toady would probably have to add a bloat. "Make civs detect undermining operations."

I hope I haven't just pointed out a flaw that will delay the release a couple of weeks.

I can't wrap my head around the idea of a "Dwarven Thief".

That said, Dwarves vs. Goblins on the same fortress map will be the coolest thing ever.

I had a dream once that dwarves had a fortress built in many layers in the stone and each vast floor was held up by massive chains on each of the four sides.  Their defense system was when they lost a level they cut the chains and BAM! pancake goblins. That would mean no supports though. Wonder if thats possible?

That's sort of interesting, but remember that once you get the upper levels in motion, the whole structure is liable to collapse.  Picture the World Trade Center towers, for instance: once the middle level went, the upper level became a projectile and fell into the hole in the middle; the supports then began buckling from bottom to top, turning the entire tower into a chaotic furball which collapsed downwards in what was sadly not even close to a controlled demolition.  On the way down, the chunks of concrete and steel pulverised one another into gravel and dust, turning papers, sensitive electronics, and even some of the people into tatters like a gigantic rock tumbler.  It was thoroughly devastating and just about everything was ruined.  (A lot of the 9/11 truthers will tell you that there was nothing left, though of course that's an absolute lie.  A lot of stuff was destroyed, sure, but most things -- including the bodies -- were left relatively intact.  Of course, intact is a relative term: the majority of the people that were "intact" were still very dead.)

Dwarves, of course, are better engineers than humans, but I figured it was important to point that out: once a building starts to collapse, it all starts to collapse unless it has an excellent structural reason not to.  Chains on the sides would have to resist a whole bunch of torsion and tension simultaneously, and it only takes one link to be weaker than the others.

There is a difference between this and that, though--the bottom layers are supported by the top layers, as opposed to the way most structures are built in the real world.  So, most likely, when that loose link goes out you will lose everything below that point, but nothing above that point will go down.

At least the way I interpreted, the plates were anchored more like rope bridges, albeit on all sides -- sort of like this:

code:
         (top-down view)
     |               |
     |               |
   +-------------------+
----| . . . . . . . . . |----
   | . . . . . . . . . |
   | . . . . . . . . . |
   | . . . . . . . . . |
   | . . . . . . . . . |
   | . . . . . . . . . |
   | . . . . . . . . . |
   | . . . . . . . . . |
----| . . . . . . . . . |----
   +-------------------+
     |               |
     |               |

So a collapsing plate on a top level (to crush the people on the next level down) would land on the next plate down, and all eight chains would have to bear the weight of the plate they're attached to plus the detached plate from above.  If this was too much to bear, at least one chain would break and both plates would collapse onto the next plate -- by this time the collapse is probably irreversible. =)

I would release only the lowest plate, squishing any goblins on the ground and probably hurting anyone riding it. That way the higher plates are left alone. As long as you cut the chains simultaneously, at least.
