What's up with mangroves?
« on: October 23, 2007, 08:35:00 pm »

Does anyone know why dwarves are fascinated with mangrove trees and engrave them all over everything? Is it just 'cause they're the only currently likable tree, or what?

It could be a symbol representative of either the civilization or the group that founded the fortress.  You can determine that with more certainty by making a backup of your save, abandoning the fortress and then looking at the engraving with an adventurer.  Then just put back your original save and go back to playing as normal.

dwarves get obsessed with weird things, at the moment every fifth engraving I get seems to be of a coffin. (I hadnt had any deaths when it started).

I like it when they make engravings of engravings.  Two fortresses ago, someone made a masterful engraving of a barrel and all the other engravers loved it.  So I kept getting "This is a masterful engraving of a rendition of a barrel."

It depends on the craftsman's personality.

I know how it works, but mangroves show up ridiculously often in the dwarves' pref  lists. Totally bizarre.

And finally next release, we will be able to settle in a mangrove swamp, satisfying all our mangrove-obsessed dwarves.

Though then I bet they'll be obsessed with some other tree then.

Maybe it's because mangrove sized trees are REAL trees to dwarves, and don't hide elves well.

I seem to remember hearing that this is a bug, and that dwarves currently only like mangrove out of all the possible wood types.

You are probably right. I don't think I have ever seen a dwarf that likes tower cap or cedar or something. It's annoying tailoring rooms to dwarf preferences since mangrove is pretty hard to come by.

Actually, not JUST preferences dictate engravings.

I put my Lengendary Miner on Engraving while making for the magma, and noticed a sudden increase in the number of engravings that featured flies. After looking around in that Miner's thoughts later, I noticed flies are her most-hated vermin.
