Author Topic: Dwarves won't work near surface or on surface - possibly in a specific volume  (Read 412 times)

Hi all,

I've started a fortress but after tunneling down and creating a big room it seems the miners have left some small areas untouched near my entrance. Enough to block a caravan. Also, noone is hauling away the wood in the stockpile near the entrance, even though I have a stockpile set to take from this stockpile near a carpenters workshop. The workshop cancels build orders because it can't find wood even though my entrance pile is full. There seems to be a volume of space which is being ignored, but I haven't mapped it. Outside of this everything still works.

One thing, I planned a large area out to build, but I didn't connect it all because I wanted to control the miners movements. I removed that but it doesn't matter.

Press "o" to see if your dwarves are ordered to stay inside. Do you have any burrows?

my first guess would be no access, the second an active burrow. Try building a wall underground and see if you can use the wood, then above ground and see if you can build with something you only have 'downstairs'. You might have accidentally destroyed a stairs or invalidated a ramp somewhere. These two are also consistent with them not finishing mining etc near the entrance, though it should be noted that dwarfs have a preference for digging lower levels first

If it's not that, check if either the workshop or the stockpile is set up with links and do without. Lastly, you can check the work orders (o) if for example wood hauling has been disabled. That would stop them from dragging the wood to the correct stockpile (correct me if I'm wrong)

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

I have no burrows, orders unchanged from default...I just figured it out. I did something new with my entrance. I channel down, then dig 11 spaces and channel down. Then I dig back 11 spaces and channel down. Apparrently I can't make the turn like that. Which sort of make sense in a real world physics kind of way. Sorry for being dumb, thanks for the practically instant replies!

well, now you know that the first thing to do is to check if you messed up the entrance, and how to do it. You'd be amazed at how often that happens

Yeah, ramps can't work like that. They have to go either straight or at a right angle.
