Finding trees
« on: July 15, 2013, 10:09:08 pm »

Okay, i've done some checking and I can't find anything anywhere to help me find a tree of a specific type post-embark (in this case Candlenut as featherwood only occurs in good biomes) any ideas? Or am I stuck with 'k'ing every tree on my 6x6?

In a game like Dwarf Fortress, going to the wiki being cheating is like saying bringing a parachute is cheating for skydiving.

Prespector from DFHack will list types of trees and bushes, and the numbers of them.

At the very least, you will know if you have that kind of tree or not.

The only way I can think of is to manually look (k) at every tree to find the type.

A LUA script for DFHack would probably eliminate all need, since the cut trees designation could be assigned based on tree material type, and it could parse all trees on the embark.

But, that's pretty cheaty.

It's much easier to cut down everything and sort the logs afterwards. Make a wood stockpile, go to the settings menu, and disable every type of wood but the kind you want. Then go to your primary wood stockpile and disable only the kind you want to separate out.

If it's important to you to let the undesirables live, you can narrow it down by looking at the shape of the trees, but I think 'k' is the only way to know for sure.

Dfhack script getplants can let you target specific trees or bushes for gathering.
