Okay. So I'm not really much of a forum person, but I just had to make an account and share this story.
Recently I've been trying to mod more diverse creatures into Dwarf Fortress--dragons, monsters, sprite civs, etc. After finishing up with a couple of changes, I made a test world to see how they worked. On a whim, I checked the Legends section. Of course, I didn't expect to find anything too exciting, but then I saw this:
Zombie red dragon? I say to myself.
That's got to be interesting. So I checked it out.
Apparently this dragon--Fone Glowingflickered was his name--was reanimated at the beginning of time by unknown forces. He settled in a cave out in the Murk of Songs, but that wasn't enough for him. Despite being dead and rotting, he somehow managed to convince the local human kingdom that he was their god of lust and wealth.
He then ousted their vampiric lawgiver and took the position for himself. Fone led his newfound kingdom to wealth and glory against the local goblin tribes, and it wasn't long before the Nation of Growls occupied a healthy portion of the northern continent. He always led the charges himself, presumably thundering ahead of his mortal armies to tear his way through the enemy. With him as their leader, the Nation of Growls became unstoppable.
Enter demon.
See, Fone wasn't the only unusual monster wandering the area. Some ways to the east, a demon named Straza Dustwealthy the Diamond of Nightmares clawed his way out of hell. A bright green humanoid goat, he was associated with wealth and murder and possessed the ability to conjure poisonous vapors. You'd think he'd attract a fair amount of attention--but instead he settled in the wilderness and went off the grid for a full fourteen years. When he finally appeared again, it was to relocate to a nearby goblin fortress, Seamenaces--little knowing that it was one of Fone Glowingflicker's favorite raiding sites. Hardly a season later the citadel was sacked and Straza was taken prisoner by Fone's human forces. He remained in the human kingdom for two years before escaping back to the goblin fortress. Instead of taking revenge, however, he became a humble farmer. When the goblins came under attack once again, this time by dwarves, Straza defended his land and killed seven of them. And when Fone returned half a season later, it was Straza who led the goblin troops.
As the armies clashed, the two leaders met on the battlefield to engage in battle. Despite the fact that Fone was immune to Straza's poison, as well as most physical damage in general, Straza managed to somehow avoid his hungry zombie maws and behead him, striking him down once and for all. He then proceeded to utterly destroy the human forces. Needless to say, he got his revenge. After the battle was over, he led his own attack on the now-disorganized humans, killing and devouring many of them (though the new leader escaped unscathed). The goblins then proclaimed him their master and general, which he remains to this day.
Tempted to take an adventure character/fortress up to the region and see if I can glimpse either Straza or Fone's twitching corpse for myself.
EDIT: I neglected to mention that Fone's armies were apparently riding on the backs of war bears, due to Fone's remarkable skills in animal husbandry.
