Channeling Demons
« on: October 19, 2007, 04:31:00 pm »

I didn't plan very well to defend against the horrors from the deep (tentacle, frog, and fire demons).  Now I want to make them walk a slow, winding path while my marksdwarves and ballista operators snipe them.

Can they cross water channels?

Can they cross magma channels?

I know they can destroy floodgates, statues and forbidden doors, but that such obstacles will slow them down some.

If I can dig them a labyrinth of either water or magma channels, I'll do it.  But if they can fly over channels, it'll be more pretty than effective.

From the "Pit Monsters" part of the Creatures entry: http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Creatures

Spirits of Fire can fly over water.  Toad demons are immune to water.  All of them are immune to magma and steam.

I think this means that ALL of them can cross magma channels, but tentacle demons cannot cross water channels.  There's no drowning damage in magma, right, just heat damage?

Keep in mind that sniping a Spirit of Fire might be...counterproductive. They have their own ranged attack, which might do more damage to you than you do to them.

It's better to bite the bullet and just take horrible losses, so long as you've got a few elite/legendary marksdwarves to /do/ (rather than take) the actual damage and finish them off.

I'm planning on opening the pits in the not too distant future, And I wanted to know if a superior-masterful ballista, along with highly trained operators, would be able to shoot them down before they get in range.
I'd put it near the chasm, with a dedicated one tile wide corridor extending past the magma river to the pits.

That's probably where the Noble system came from in the first place - a cold hard calculation to save Dwarven civilization from thermonuclear politician brawls.

Interesting note I discovered the other day when try to kill demons with drawbridges. Demons will appear within a few tiles of ANY pit. Not just the uncovered ones.
I had a long corridor full of drawbridges that was going to smash down on demons that appeared and to make sure that I got them I built a side corridor with fortifications to see through. Much to my surprise shortly after uncovering the first pit Demons appeared right beside my axedwarf that was keeping watch.

code:

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
%......................&@&.%###%
%.......................&..%%%%
L..FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF%%%%%%
...DBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB.....%
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%#%
                             %#%
                             %#%
                              %

Where:
% is a wall
# is a pit
@ is an axedwarf
B is a bridge
D is a locked door
& is a demon
L is the smashing lever
F is Fortifications

I had not yet discovered the upper pit when they appeared. Long story short I reloaded from a backup.

its not what you think, they were not moving through solid rock from the undiscovered pit.

demons start hidden and sneaking, and are only discovered when they get near a dwarf or pet.  i bet they snuck down the bridge unseen, around your fortification, and ambushed your dwarf.

its a good idea to chain up dogs or something, so you have something to spot the demons with.

There were more dwarfs running by the LOCKED door and the demons didn't have enough times to get all the way around the fortifications. As well after I reloaded I sent in the rest of army before hitting the pits, killed the demons that could be seen, including one that was still in the corridor of smashing death, I sent a lone marksdwarf to investigate further, he went towards the pit, walked over a tile near the pit, and then right behind him a demon appeared where he had just been, there was no way the demon could have snuck around him because the corridor is only one tile wide and he still hadn't reached the pit.

So demons just appear out of thin air within a few tiles of a pit. If there is no rock there.
