So I've just started out and my woodcutter - who has my only axe - got injured and can't walk.  Now I have no wood because no one else will chop without an axe and I don't have the materials yet to make another one.  Is there a way to make him give the axe to someone else?

in theory, disabling his labor should make him let go of the axe. He might have a problem with it because he tries to store it instead of just dropping it

How badly injured are they? If you have any splints or crutches, you can probably get the dwarf back on their feet without waiting for them to heal naturally

Surgery's an easy job, you don't need any equipment for that. A table helps, but just having a hospital zone and a free dwarf with Surgery enabled will be enough.

Really?  I figured it'd need a lot of prep. And a table I can do - I have plenty of stone, just no wood.  I'll try that, thanks!

You'll also need thread, cloth, and either a splint or a crutch. Hopefully you have the splint or crutch ready, as those need to be made of wood or metal. Do you have any workshops or constructions made from wood?

Edit: just to make sure, you only need to have those things available. They don't need to be in chests or bags in the hospital zone, or in the hospital zone at all.

cuts need surturing (thread), surface wounds need bandaging (cloth), broken bones need either gypsum plaster (and water to make it stick) or a splint, broken legs may want a crutch, but I don't know if that is an absolute requirement. Traction may help with some injuries

Im pretty sure you can "seize" his axe

look at his inventory, look at the axe, then hit D to dump it (make sure u got a garbage pit)
Then after its dumped.  undump it and a new dwarf should go grab it.

Besides that, did u know that a wooden trainings axe can somehow be used to cut a tree ?

does dumping also work when another dwarf is still holding it? I know it doesn't work on owned items

Well, disabling the wood cutting labor on my disabled dwarf worked - someone else picked up the axe and now I have wood again.   And I managed to build a hospital and my disabled dwarf isn't even disabled anymore.  So all's well that ends well   Thanks for the help, folks!

Now make three or four wooden training axes so that it doesn't happen again.
