Nobles claiming stuff
« on: October 18, 2007, 01:32:00 pm »

My nobles' rooms are disaster areas.  No, not because of tantrums.  Because they decided to claim a bunch of crap that they have no use for.  I'm thinking the easiest way to clean out those rooms (and reclaim the narrow iron chainmail shirts I want to melt) is to un-assign the rooms and let the haulers clean it out prior to re-assigning it.

Is there a way for them NOT to claim all that crap?

That doesn't involve excessive amounts of fire or water? I doubt it. How nice are their rooms, without all these claimed items? Perhaps their ability to claim items is dependant on the quality of their quarters. If the whole bloody place is gold plated, maybe they won't be interested in anything else.

I take it you have the economy on? That's trouble by itself.

The nobles pretty much claim whatever they feel like.  If an item lines up with one of their likes on their preference screen it will be likely they will fill up their entire room with whatever it is they like.

And no, there is no way to get the items back that doesn't involve killing them.

Stopping them?  Maybe they don't claim stuff if they don't have floor space for it?  I'm not sure how to help you.  I tend to just ignore what they do in their rooms.  Although it is interesting when the Baron's floor is covered in dresses.

They were satisfied with their room assignments, in that they met or exceeded slightly their demands, so it wasn't that the NEEDED the crap, they just WANTED the crap.  One of them has half of the spare clothing I made for the fortress locked up in his room.  I guess he's a fashionista.

Makes sense to me: in the United States, 20% of the population controls 50% of the wealth. ;-)

this only happens when the economy is on, dwarves will try and buy things they like. Nobles and legendaries don't have to pay for anything, so that means they just snag whatever they want for free whenever they want (nobles are much worse then legendaries).

if you provide chests then the nobles will dump the things in there, though I'm not sure if they will clean up the mess they have already left. Note that coffers only hold coins and I'm not sure if glass boxes actually work right now so best to make wooden or metal chests to store things in. Clothes needs cabinets, afaik they work fine regardless of the material. Armor and weapons use armor and weapon racks but they don't work at all for now so those will just get scattered.

I haven't had the economy yet, but I have noticed certain items of clothing appearing in cabinets in nobles' rooms occasionally.  I figured someone just dropped them there, but this explanation makes more sense, considering the items weren't xwornx ones.

Noble Fashionista...lol..

Funny, I've not started the economy lately and I don't have any trouble with nobles filling up rooms with junk. The only time I've ever had grabby nobles is after the economy starts, never when I don't make coins.

Are you sure you are not thinking of worn clothing? nobles (and all dwarves) will replace worn clothes and leave the old ones laying around even before the economy starts. This will make a mess if you build new clothes and don't make cabinets.

Ive never started the economy.

I remember one noble for some freaky reason loving wilted plants. his huge 6x6 room was stuffed with them on every tile after i accidentaly let my food stores fill up and let some plants wilt on the fields.

The noble slackers will always do this, stuff on the ground will not slow anyone down though, mostly I ignore my nobles and think of them as food and trade haulers who occasionally do something interesting like go to clean a trap mid seige (let em do something for their keep, run you little purple bugger, run!)  By about year 6-7 if you have the econemy on and plenty of smelters to melt goblin crap you should have 100+ bars of iron (at this point I start melting all my armour and weapons and making better stuff) I try to leave a few of everything (goblin wear) for the nobles to grab rather than the good stuff.  Also all of my nobles live in a huge collection of rooms on the far side of the chasm, no reason to have em where usfull stuff can be (odd hole in the wall for ratmen to jump through can be lots of fun).

In short if you really want the stuff kill the bugger, other than that just ignore it and be happy that noble dwarves are risking life, limb and elephant stomping to collect "their" crap.

Well, like I said, mine weren't marked as worn - they were new stuff and no economy.  It's only happened in a couple of fortresses that I can remember - if it happens again, I'll check to see if there's a match in the material and the dwarf's preferences.  Sometimes I get greedy nobles who demand lots of things, and sometimes they're so quiet I forget they're there.   :D
