Water spreading after fall
« on: June 12, 2008, 01:30:00 pm »

Does water splatter everywhere after falling from a great height? I'm planning to have a waterfall in my entrance cavern, looking something like this:
code:

+++++++
+O+++O+    + floor
++###++    O wall
++#+#++    # floor grate
++###++
+O+++O+
+++++++

Underneath will obviously be housed a sewer system, with floodgates linked to the Emergency Fortress Magma Containment Lever (Do Not Pull).

I'm intending to have water drop at least two or three levels, landing on the center tile, and would like to know if the floor will get all muddy. If it will, I'll skip the center floor tile and just have an open pit.

I don't know that water splatters on the way down, but I do know that I have made a layout extremely similar to that (just up against a wall instead), and the water splooshed all over the place.  It worked for a short while and then spread, even though the area under the grates was nowhere near full.  I'd be careful about it.

It *should* work as long as your drainage system can handle the outflow, although you might get a little muddiness around it.  You should probably use a double-wide pipe at least -- I did something similar with a single-wide and it tended to overflow sometimes.

One thing to consider is that water doesn't actually have to hit anything to create mist on that level.

So just running water through a grate would create relaxing mist?

Yeah, I know the center floor tile isn't actually needed. I have a natural waterfall on the same map, and it's misty all the way up. But I find it prettier this way. Plus, it makes it a lot harder for those bearded idiots to drown themselves.

Maybe I'll build another similar setup somewhere else first and test it.
