Mason needs rock?
« on: October 17, 2007, 01:40:00 pm »

Hello, gentlemen! Newbie here, who's run into a bit of a pickle.

I've tried a few times to start a new fortress, and I can't get the mason's workshop to work. Every time I order anything from there it says "Mason cancels suchandsuch; Needs rock." Now, there are plenty of rocks because I've built a stockpile and I can see that it's already filled with stones, plus, my craftsdwarf is making rock crafts.

In my previous game I managed to survive maybe three winters before everyone starved and in that fortress the masons worked just fine. I'm fairly sure that I've redone all the steps I did in my more successful fortress, but my masons have failed to build rock objects in two fortresses now. Am I forgetting something crucial or is this a bug of some sort?

Thank you in advance and my apologies if this was a horribly noobish question!

Is it possible the workshop is marked to work exclusively with dark stone or light stone at the moment?

Not everyone here is male, there are quite a few women here, so "gentlemen" may not be proper for the forum users... just FYI.

As for the needs rock, first check to make sure you arent using light or dark stone... second make sure they can get into and out of the shop. third, check to see the closest stone (that isnt dark or light) is accessible, its possible that the dwarf is trying to get the closest grey stone and its inaccessible.  Then, maybe check the pile really close to see if there are any grey stones there.  Last, maybe a dwarf is claiming all the grey stone? this happens with food sometimes.

I'd like to advocate "gentle dwarves" or "gentle posters" for a graceful and non-gender-specific honoric.

I am female (in real life, too) but find it hard to get offended by "gentlemen" since I default to calling all my dwarves "he".  Though enough Mistems in my current fortress have had babies that I've learned "Mistem" is a girl's name.

Ah! That's what was going wrong with my workshop! I'd built the entrance against an impassable part of the shop. Welp, you learn something new every day I guess. I didn't know that there were impassable parts in the workshops, but that made me go check the Wiki and realize what a silly newbie I was being. Now my fortress is running smoothly again. Thanks, chief!
