So where's the aquifer?
« on: June 12, 2008, 12:20:00 pm »

I thought I'd try playing on an aquifer starting location to see what kind of challenge there was with no stone. At least I wouldn't be short of water.

But what do I find when I get there? Solid rock everywhere and no sign of any water.

I have tried digging down all over the map, and I hit diorite after at most 2 z-levels of sand.

I'm pretty sure in the embark map it showed the aquifer being at a level near the surface, but just in case it was under the rock, I've tried digging down up to 12 z-levels in some places, but still no water.

Any hints on where I should be digging (the surface is almost all sand with diorite rock in a some places.)

Moron, your best bet is to embark somewhere else, sometimes it says there's an aquafier even if there isn't one and visa versa.  The only other thing I can come up with is that half your map has one and the other half doesn't.

I just submitted a bug report for this - every desert-with-an-aquifer I've tried has come up bone-dry. Very annoying.

Ok thanks, I tried abandoning the fort and re-embarking as close as I could find to the same location.

This time I found the water easily, 2 levels beneath the surface. There's still rock in some parts of the map, but the total lack of trees could also make it a challenge (I also did not get the option to bring any wood from the embark menu)

Really? I don't think I've ever seen dwarves not have access to tower-cap logs. What would the wagon be made out of?

I think he means those warnings you get about salt water, aquafiers, etc.

Oops...er no

I'm just too much of a noob to know what I'm doing and didn't go into the 3rd screen in the embark menu where all the extra items are like stones and logs

Don't aquifers exist in SOIL and not in rock? Rock isn't a good material for water to seep through to an underground water supply.
And no, don't mention underground rivers in mountains. That's water flowing through a cavern, not a layer of water underground.

Also, I noticed that if you dig to an aquifer and build a well over it, the well stays dry. Guess you'd need to pump the aquifer to a separate pool for the well...
Could it be that the game doesn't handle the water in an aquifer like other sources of water?

Do you mean in DF or in real life? In real life, aquifers are often in "solid" rock. Most stone is porous to a certain extent, and water can flow through the interconnected network of vacuoles. Just because it's "solid" to our eyes doesn't mean water can't soak through it.

Most oil exists this way, too. There's not some large open space underground where the oil has flowed to like a lake - it's actually impregnated into rock.

With both oil and water, all you do is dig a shaft straight down and the liquid will flow into it, preferring the large open easy-to-flow space over being trapped in a layer of rock.

DF aquifers can also exist in any layer type, soil or rock.
