Why does this keep happening?
« on: October 16, 2007, 09:12:00 pm »

Just after the first winter a farmer was taken by a fey mood. His skills where growing and cooking, he rushed to the craftsdrawves shop and began gathering wood and bone. He cranked out a artifact wooden crown with spikes of turtle bone of some such. Unfortunitly he became super agile in this so I figered why not use that to help mine out the rest of the fort, and he eventually died when he broke into the magma area with disasterious results.

Strangely enough when I re-dug out the area his wooden crown survived. As soon as it was uncovered however another dwarf went fey and made... another wooden artifact.

Do dwarves come with some pre-disposed set of skills that are not losted? Before that I had never made a wooden craft in any of my fortresses.

ekkud Egenid was supposedly killed by one of those "elephant" things the commoners have started dreaming up. I swear he killed himself just to piss me off with their lame fantasy.
I do wonder how he managed to break his own back though.

Looks like a coincidence to me. One time I had a fey mason make a marble bed. A year later, another mason went fey, made an obsidian bed ... with a design of a dwarf raising a marble bed on it. How very strange.

Just be aware that dwarves with no crafting or constructing skills (like farmers and peasants) can still go fey, and in that case a random construction skill will upgrade. (I think so anyway.)

yeah if they don't have a production skill they get a random one. you got unlucky and got woodcrafting, I almost always get bonecrafting.

by the way, the artifact didn't get destroyed because artifacts are completely indestructible. They can only be lost by being stolen, washed away in the river, dropped into the chasm or sunk to the bottom of the magma flow. Even caveins won't destroy them, digging out the square they were in frees them from the rock.

Can splatbridges destroy the artifact? I was under the assumption splatbridges crush all.

That's actually a good question. Probably, though you would pretty much have to do it on purpose (or crush the dwarf carrying it). I hadn't thought about that because I don't use splatbridges.

Nor do I. But I could probably rig up one in one of my fortresses since I don't actively play them as of late. Backing it up, of course. :P
