Troops blocking Dragonfire for allies behind them

This might be old news, but I only noticed it myself today.  When dragonfire is blocked, the portion of the cone actually stops at the dwarf who blocked it.  I knew that happened to projectiles, but I assumed cone attacks were treated differently.  Because of the speed of the animation, I never noticed dwarves parting the flames until now.  I just had a wild dragon appear right next to three of my dwarves on guard duty.  All three were clumped together.  The first marksdwarf blocked all of the fire with his buckler, preventing any from reaching the other two soldiers behind him.  Here's are the combat logs for each of the combatants, dragon first, then the soldiers in order of attack.

On a side note, this happened in the middle of a forest, but while the area was charred, no fires were actually started.  Did my dwarves just get lucky?

Dragonfire crisp-a-fries  anything in its cone (unless blocked). fires do not start because the game checks for flames after the blast, I think. and there's nothing left to burn.

Though maybe that's the issue. The concept is just too simple for the dwarven mind to grasp!

AH, good to know!  I've been keeping my dragons underground for fear of starting wildfires in the middle of battle, but I'd love to bring the fight to the invaders on occasion.  I HATE that I had to kill this one, but I didn't have time to flee and lure it to a cage trap :(.

Edit - Oh, but wait!  If I'm fighting a siege, enemy leather armor can burn, thus starting fires... I think I'll keep my dragons underground after all.

As stated above the trees wont burn.  As long as you dont mind the smoke and are not useing herbalists it should have minimul impact aside from removeing all the grass.

You could set up a water tank or two on the surface to flood the area after (or during) the battle to put out any fires in areas you care about.  You might also be able to use this to wash goblinite into a relatively safe collection area.

I recently witnessed cave moss burning for a few ticks underground when (possibly) fire vermin started a fire.  One dwarf got surrounded by the flames and died :(.  If cave moss can burn and trap a dwarf, surface grass seems like a possible threat, too.  I don't mean from the initial blast of dragonfire, which apparently turns the grass to ash instantly, but rather a burning enemy that runs over a fresh patch.

Oh, that sounds like a cool idea!  However, how badly would steam hurt if dwarves got caught in it?

Fire doesn't go up or down ramps. A grid of channels will serve as effective firebreaks, though they'll make combat harder to follow visually. You could also use floors.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
