Cavern Trouble
« on: June 21, 2013, 01:06:19 am »

Bit of a newb here. Finally found my caverns 47 levels below the ground (yeah, 10-11, thanks wiki), and I figure it'd probably be a good idea to make a gatehouse at the entrance. Door, fortifications, okay good. Now send in a squad to explore. Okay, they're starving. Pull em out... Holy shit that's a ton of Troglodytes. Okay everyone just ran off... and my squad captain just had her brains bashed in... okay, fair enough, better preparation next time. Meet up at the top. Okay, a Minotaur just showed up. Okay he just killed 15 armed dwarves. Everyone is bleeding. He's dead now at least, let's just check 'R' and... Dwarven child is fighting Troglodyte. Srsly.

I look, and there's about 30 civilians down in the deep dark caverns, not grouped together, being picked off one by one by the horde of troglodytes. I assume they're after the first body, forbid it. Assholes keep coming. Forbid all the other bodies, assign everyone to a squad, tell em to station outside the door so I can forbid it. More civilians keep coming down. "

What do I do to get my stupid dorfs to stop running into the hellholes. I can't send in the military to cover them because my military is mostly in the form of red paint all over the mountainside.

Are they trying to gather spider silk?  Or are there any other items lying about they're trying to pick up?

Try inspecting one of the civilians and see what job they have.

... how it is even possible to minotaur to wipe out 15 armed dwarves? Even if they wouldn't have any skills, someone would get a lucky hit.

If you have loom, it creates automatically "collect web" -job. Check those dwarves down there - what are they doing? Or trying to do? Stockpiling items?

Also, backbacks and waterskins for exploring military.

Auto collect webs... the bane of cavern breaching... I always turn that off at embark or soon after. To do so hit "o - w - c" I believe. It's in workshop orders at least if that's not quite right.

You could also activate an alert, along with a burrow designated within your fort, to tell all your dwarves to stay inside. It will also give you a heads-up to anything you might have forgotten to forbid outside that burrow, via the spam of "item inaccessible: forbidden area" spam.

a door, by the way, is not a good security measure, in the caverns or above ground. Or did you mean a raising bridge?

Minotaurs are extremely good at fighting, so a group of unskilled dwarfs that don't arrive as a group but one by one would get seriously hurt. Also note that only 9 melee dwarfs can attack at their best efficiency at any one time and that is only if they spread out and surround the minotaur from all 9 directions, which doesn't usually happen, and that any dwarfs together on a tile will force one of them to crouch, making him a very easy target

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Thanks Guys. It was the silk job.
Minotaur killed them one by one. They didn't show up in groups
