So one crazy guy is raving about squid, and the place is suffering disappearances and fear.
I sure hope this world doesn't have Illithids.

We might want to investigate that pendant. Show it to Alaya, ask if she recognises the symbol?

Alright. Lets get back to our roots to unwind, get closer to the locals, and extablish a reputation as a capable if not badass outdoorsman.

Let some of the townsfolk know you are looking to spend a day hunting, and would rather not do so alone. Ask Alaya if she would be willing to spread the word as well.

Continue to be helpful around town and do scribe work where needed, and try to look into the identity of crazy squid man.

+1, I guess.

I sure hope this world doesn't have Illithids.

We might want to investigate that pendant. Show it to Alaya, ask if she recognises the symbol?

On an impulse, you draw the pendant from your pocket and ask Alaya if she recognizes the symbol. After a close look, she shakes her head. With a gesture of resignation, you return the amulet to your pocket.

An idea strikes you, and a plan begins to form. You shift the conversation's gears without bothering to use the clutch and ask Alaya if any hunting parties are leaving tomorrow. You learn that a few men regularly go hunting when deer are plentiful, since the lord of the land doesn't bother enforcing claims to the animals. After a bit more talking, she agrees to let them know you'll be coming along tomorrow.

You meet up with the hunters shortly before dawn. From the small amount of light on the horizon, you can tell that the sun will be fully up in less than an half an hour. Introductions are made, and you recognize a few of the people you'd helped out the previous day. All of them recognize you as the scribe; you can tell from their thinly veiled condescension that they already have certain expectations of what the scrawny, thin-armed scribes of the south would act like.

They obviously don't know you very well.

When asked if you have hunting equipment, you nod and state that you have your knife. The condescension coalesces into full-blown derision. You smile slightly at the change, and the group heads out after you refuse their offer of a bow and arrows.

You trek through the forest behind the other men. In the dim, half-lit dawn, the only sounds are of the wind rustling branches and twigs snapping underfoot. Something nags at you, though. You can't put your finger on it, but something is... off. You glance behind you and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

    "Everyone. Stop."

The panic creeping into your voice gets through to the other men immediately. In any other circumstance, they most likely would have jeered at the easily scared scribe, but they quickly react to your command. You take a few deep breathes to calm yourself and carefully examine your surroundings.

    Something shifts.

You snap your head towards the movement, eliciting a slight jump from the others. Narrowing your eyes, you focus carefully on the spot you saw it.

    You wait.

    And wait.

    And wait.

As the others start to relax and move again, you remain still. Your survival senses are in full force. You feel something moving...

    THERE!

You catch sight of the movement. A small shadow, the whisper of a branch moving, the grass rustling in it's wake. That's all you catch. The men call out for you to hurry up and rejoin the group, and you reluctantly follow. The feeling of panic regresses.

[redacted due to sucky drawing skills]

That afternoon, the party returns to Beriac. With nothing more than your knife, your wits, and a well-made trap the others didn't know about, you took down a young doe. The rest of the hunting party was suitably impressed. This scribe was full of surprises.

The fear of that morning is nothing but a memory, now. In fact, most of the group has probably forgotten about it. Already a few of the hunters are talking to friends from the village about how the scribe just went out on his own with a knife and came back with a deer, which boosts your ego considerably. After negotiating a price from the butcher, you return to the inn to deal with your bloodstained cloak, where you find Alaya again. She smiles as you enter the inn.

"I heard you caught a deer in a footrace and fought it to the death with your bare hands."

You shrug. "Eh, I'll take that story over my version of it." Her eyes sparkle.

"How did you really catch it?"

"Well, you know us crazy northern barbarians. We have a few tricks up our sleeves."

You've made a bit of a name for yourself and seen something menacing. Wat do?

It looks like a man holding a goat. The town's problem could be some nut sacrificing children and goats to some sort of dark power. The way I see it, we have two leads.

1: We look into people who would have reason to do such a thing. Ask Alaya what the news around town was just before the tragic craziness started. Anybody who was particularly angry, suffering, or otherwise newsworthy at that time could be our guy.

2: Whoever that man was, he was swift and stealthy. The best warriors and hunters in town should be noted, and considered suspects.

We should also check our own notes and memories to see if we know of any sort of black art that calls for such sacrifice.

We need a group of friends to support us when we make the fact we are poking around in this well known. Hang with the hunters we travel with whenever they are in the Inn, and perhaps Calib's group as well.

It's supposed to be Teki holding the deer he killed, but I suck at both drawing hoofed creatures and shading and especially shading hoofed creatures, so you got a silhouette.

Sorry about the double-post, but I have a question. Is there something wrong with this suggestion adventure? I mean, am I doing something wrong; poor writing quality, too wordy, boring story, etc. It's just, the thread gets an update, one or two suggestions, and then falls back to the fifth page of the board. It looks to me like there's something I need to improve, but I don't know what.

Because I think Weirdsound suggestion pretty much covers what we can do right now, it has nothing to do with your writing.

Yeah. Its good. It has been confusing me as well. It should be getting way more attention. You have alot of views for a game where only 2-3 people post, so I bet you have some lurkers or whatnot.

Anyway, if the silhouette was us... I'm stumped on how to proceed. I guess we should look into other things for now, and get back into the plot when it forces itself upon us.

Lets take some formal notes on the town as part of our scholarly research...
-Figure out where Rugal kel Selos lives, and if he takes visitors. He might no a bit about local history.
-Ask Alaya about local religious, marriage, and childrearing customs for your notes. If she takes it as flirting, you may as well indulge her a bit as well.
-Get to know the hunters better. Get to know some of their wild hunting stories, and record them for prosperity. Buy them drinks and get to know their families when you have the chance, we need a tight circle of friends for when we do go after the creature.
-Gather and take notes on plants. Do this in broad daylight and do go so far that you lose sight of the town.

Okay, I'm going to try and change the pacing of the story; instead of a list of things to do in each update, I'm going to have Teki follow one train of thought per update. That way I can have a bit more detail in what happens, as opposed to 'Teki goes here and does this what now'.

Which of these actions (or you could suggest something else, if anybody has new ideas to add) do you want Teki to follow through on first?

Well, we're already talking to Alaya...

Well, we're already talking to Alaya...

You idly wonder about the culture of this region. While you don't have your note-taking things with you at the current time, you have a good memory. Another sudden conversational switch occurs. Alaya is slightly nonplussed by the random shift, but she rolls with it. As the conversation progresses, you ask about local religions, religious practices, marriage customs.

As you get around to the questions about marriage, a door creaks open and the innkeeper enters the room. His face cycles through a multitude of expressions (none of them very positive), and you can guess he just heard the last part of the conversation. Something must be bothering him in particular, though...

    Oh, yeah. He's Alaya's father.

You quickly bring the conversation to a close.

Spoiler: Author's Note (click to show/hide)

I'm going to try a game with a little more audience participation: a multiplayer RPG. I'm locking this thread and letting it sink down into the briny depths of this board. Alas, poor Teki; we hardly knew ye.

I'd focus on getting closer to the hunters until they feel comfortable talking monster business with us. Buy them drinks, hang out where they hang out, all that. Swap stories with them, perhaps one of them will bring up the monster without you even having to ask.
