Aaak! Puppysplotion!
« on: June 26, 2013, 07:25:32 pm »

Just a heads up for all the newbies out there. While bringing 6 dogs along 5 of them being female seems like a good idea at first, dogs have many, many puppies. Multiply that by 5 and you can see my position right now.

I can't wait for my food stockpile to fill up with various puppy organs.

Cut their population back and stuff them all in one large room underground. Call it the dog room, and put a hatch in the ceiling to drop prisoners in.

How exactly does one drop prisoners in the hatch? I am intrigued.

I've been told that you can stuff all of them into one cage and they'll still grow inside of it, the quantum cage allowing for an unlimited amount of puppies to be put in. Then link it to a pressure plate and wait for the invaders to take a wrong step, the step that unleashes the horde and seals their fate. Bonus points if you have a door close behind the invader(s) and lock before they can escape. Further bonus points if all of your puppies numbering in the hundreds are war puppies.

Wearing flaming clothes on the other hand, or better yet, wearing nothing at all and being on fire... that is the essence of dwarfish behavior."

You call it "puppyslosion," I call it "thief filter." A consistent feature of all my forts ever is a pasture near the entrance to my fort, laid out such that invaders entering the fort must pass through it, where I pasture all of my dogs. Their puppies inherit the assignment and also all stay put, and when they reach adulthood I train them to be war dogs like their parents. It's a good way to make sure all the children and artifacts stay in the fort, where you put them.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Pit zones. Check the wiki for "mass pitting".

Of course as you said they can be emergency rations as well. Hell, you can find a challenge on the wiki called "The Mad Butcher" or some such where you feed your Dwarves nothing put puppies. Yes we are all very much mentally ill although, since it's the norm here, I guess that we actually aren't insane after all.............

Never thought about using a hatch cover over a containment pit. Does that stop dwarves freaking out at naked, imprisoned goblins?

Or z-enter (to view animals) than going down the list hitting b to select various animals to be butchered.

One thing you could do is butcher all the wimpty puppies to improve the breed of the dogs you have remaining.  This also has the benefit of, over the long term, increasing the amount of food you get from butchered dogs as well.  Of course, the growth bug throws a big wooden corkscrew into the works at this point, but hopefully that will be permanently fixed soon.

I tend to store all of my puppies in a single cage.

I like to have 2-3 "Animal Shelter" pens near the edge of my maps. The problem takes care of itself once a year, when unclaimed pets are "gassed"
