Help me find the hole
« on: June 25, 2013, 01:09:17 pm »

*snicker* I just read over the title again... heh

Anyway, here's the deal: I just had a pterodactyl (or pterasaur? whichever) FB show up in my first cavern layer. It attacked a goose in the cavern, which I'd first presumed had gotten locked in there when I sealed it off... but then it flew into my fort proper somehow and caused some excitement there, being a firebreather and all.

I thought my stairwell was secure -- natural or constructed walls and floors all the way down. Yet somehow the FB got in anyway. The only spot I can think of that might be insecure is, at the first cavern layer, I have some Up/Down Staircases over a natural wall with a ramp next to one of them. The space over the ramp is covered with a grate, but can creatures still path diagonally through such a normally-inaccessible route?

Anyway, here's the save, if someone with more knowledge of pathing quirks wants to help me out:

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I hear that flyers can fly diagonal, even between a wall and ceiling.

My guess would be there's something fishy with your water access. Try moving grate-covered holes one tile away from the stairs.
(And don't to periodically unforbid everything on living floors. They tend to throw food around and it gets forbidden.)

You're right, I do remember seeing warnings (on the wiki?) about making sure to floor over the tops of exposed fortifications, for just that reason. So he probably came up between the grates and the walls, directly into the stairwell.

That said, he would have had to path through the 7/7 water to do that... do FBs generally shy away from swimming like other creatures? Or was he just that determined to get in?

FBs will quite happily go paddling to get into your fortress.
