I don't know how fast water freezes. While flying, it's not "water," but it's actually a generic projectile "glob" that happens to be made of water. When the glob hits something, it turns back into 2/7 water (7/7 for the silly modded globs) at the point of impact. At that point, it's water again and freezing physics probably start being applied at that point for any transition to ice.

So exposing the firing range to the outside in a cold weather biome might create a freeze ray then?

Yes, although it would quickly create a wall of ice and jam.  Good against small numbers of targets, anyway.

Not if you have a magma channel heating the floor between the freeze ray and firing range.

So, would the tile freeze, and then melt, or not freeze at all?

You set it up so you can have magma flow under it when you want the ice melted, and activate floodgates or something to stop the flow and let it freeze.

I expect you could line things up so that the first tile it freezes on is mid-air, making an overcomplicated cave-in gun.

Won't work, it won't freeze until it hits something. once it hits something, it'll immedietely freeze if its cold enough. If it freezes when it hits something, then it'll then be supported by that something. Unless...do raised drawbridges support stuff?

Nope... that could definitely be used to make a cave-in gun that doesn't require the top of the shaft to be defended.  I wonder if there's a way to auto-melt the ice after the cave-in?
