Bail + Ransoms
« on: June 22, 2013, 11:28:38 am »

I got two Ideas.

Idea:1=Bail when your charcter you can pay a ammount of money to bail them out but It will be something insane like 100g's or something

Idea:2=You can try to get money out of the family from the person you kidnapped but there a 50 % chance they will get the police to raid the safe house where the hostage is.

That is an idea. Bailing people out between their arrest and their trial. There should be restrictions, though: 1. Not all crimes should allow people to be released on bail, 2. It should depend on one of the issues. At C+ bail is de facto useless (because you get killed on sight by the cops), at C it should be present but particularly high, at M and L it should be lower, and at L+ bail is outlawed as a way for wealthy criminals to get off easier than poor ones.

You get your bail money back? If that's the case I'm going to be stunned that I didn't know that.

While I can't say I've ever been arrested before....my understanding was that your bail is essentially a deposit to encourage you to return for you trial.  Violate the terms of your bail or fail to appear for trial and you forfeit your bail.  Do as you're told, and that money is returned when you return for trial.

Somebody who actually knows what they're talking about can correct any errors in my understanding.

That's correct, as far as I know. Perhaps when the laws are more Conservative, it ceases to become a deposit and is instead a straight-up bribe to the police?

Hm. Bail could be handled in a way that when it's posted, the Liberal is free to go until his trial. At the date of the trial, he gets a choice of showing up or not showing up for trial. If he does the former, everything proceeds as normal. If he decides to miss his trial, he gets flagged (so no possibility of posting bail at after later arrests) any maybe flagged with additional crimes (I would guess that missing your trial on purpose is a crime, but I'm not an expert).

Of course, things gets interesting if said Liberal commits more crimes during this time. The game would need to track the status of each crime, e.g. "pending trial", "not yet arrested for it", "acquitted of", "found guilty of".

For simplicity's sake, I don't think we really need to track "acquitted of". In real life, you would run into additional complications in daily life from being arrested and accused even if you were acquitted, but in LCS we don't really need that nuance.

I like the idea of letting a Liberal temporarily go free if the LCS can post bail.  We would probably want to give the player a reminder that so-and-so is supposed to appear in court tomorrow.

Further, bail usually involves restrictions on what you can do.  For example, if you got caught trafficking drugs, you would be ordered not to have contact with drugs during your bail period.  That might be over-complicated for the purposes of the game, though, due to the need to devise bail conditions for every possible crime.

Two words:

"Bragging rights"  :D

(Liberal X literally got away with murder, hehe)

If the detailed tracking of crimes and their status gets implemented, then having an "acquitted of" category should not be too much additional effort.

Pretty much: the "loan" is a bail bondsperson, who requires ~10% of the amount of your actual bail amount--but keeps it when you return.
