not sure I understand pressure plates
« on: June 22, 2013, 06:50:08 am »

So my well is a bit off the beaten track, because the only fresh-ish water source I could find was a cavern pool. I haven't sanitized the caverns yet, so to avoid any unplanned fun I wanted a way to keep anything out that decided to climb up my well.

What I *thought* I could was to build a door in a 1 tile wide hallway with pressure plates on either side, set to allow citizens and with a restrictive dwarf-sized weight limit, that would open the door whenever anyone got close to it.

But nobody will get close to it. Once I link the mechanism, nobody will go down there.

Should I just disassemble the thing? How do I protect my fort from the big bad crawlies below?

dwarfs don't recognise that a door will open when they get close enough to trigger the pressure plate. They see a closed door so they don't go there at all

You could dig to a bit below the well and make some floor bars under it (floor bars were right I hope?). The well can function through them, but creatures can't fly up through them or destroy them except in special circumsances. A small question though. Are you mostly worried about forgotten beasts? Most other flying cave creatures arn't that agressive (that I encountered). Those would simply break down the door, so your idea would have no use anyway

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

And then everyone melted.

Thanks, I'm sanitizing the cavern now anyway... I just disassembled the whole thing.
