Stone types and blocks
« on: June 22, 2013, 12:12:21 pm »

I just started a new fort and I have an abundance of Jet in the upper layers. I was planning on using it to create a wall out of blocks but my mason stays idle. Are there certain stone types that cannot be used for constructions? I couldn't find anything in the forum or the wiki about it...

You can't do anything with "economic stones"... but jet isn't one of them. Maybe the boulders are forbbiden or out of reach? Or your workshop is set to *take from*?

Are you sure that the masonry labor is active for your dwarves? Are they just idle or are they on breaks? Try to create a Jet stockpile next to your workshops?

Check your Stocks screen. Make sure that your mason is allowed to use it.

If this all doesn't fix it, your dwarfs are lazy. Apply magma.

Try rubbing a cat on it, that seems to help.

Check your Masons Workshop and make sure your mason is allows to use it. (press q, select the masons workshop, press P, then 1 to allow anyone to use the workshop or find the masons name and press ENTER to restrict use to him and whoever else is already selected).

Is the problem about creating the blocks or building the wall using them afterwards?

The mason should create the blocks like anything else in the masons workshop. The mason labour is also needed for the actual construction of the walls.

You might want to have more than one mason if you plan on constructing a lot of walls and the like. By changing the workshop profile for your masons workshop you can keep the unskilled workers out of it.
