Hey guys,

Just a quick bit of info that most of you probably already know...

This assumes you've prepared the paths for the forges/smelters etc under them.

1. Designate only 1 dwarf with mining in therapist.
2. Designate the warm wall (diagonally from the lava is what I usually do).
3. Wait for the dwarf for accept the task (the block should start flashing).
4. Pause, then designate a different block 20 or so away from step 1 block, preferrably on the same level and near by the exit from the lava trenches).
5. Unpause, watch as Urist McFlameRetardantPants comes to mine out to allow flow.

Since he has another order to mine nearby he (hopefully!) will not get the ? mark and hesitate (thus killing him by lava fun) and should immediately move towards the next designated block.

This has worked for me on multiple embarks - where previously I would assign a no skill peon to do the task (knowing he would die).

I usually use the bridge exploit.

If the level above your magma channels is usable to any degree, there's an easy way to reduce the risk to the breaching miner even further (possibly to true zero): order the dividing wall tile removed via channelling from above. This can be done from an adjacent square, and if there's a solid wall above the spot as well, there's no way anyone can stand on the tile itself while it's being dug. It introduces another possible entryway, but you can simply wall it off once the miner has finished their job.

I never got my head around the way that most people do, I dig out my forge room above the ceiling of the magma (It does require a lot of re-designation after the next block of warm stone is located).
Then, I simply channel out a couple of straight lines and no dorfs are killed!

I use this method as well (see signature), and the risk is minimal - though non-zero...if your miner ends up with no job immediately after channelling, and simply stands still after breaching while he contemplates what to do next, it's possible for the magma to fill up your lower level so quickly that a small amount splashes up to where the miner is twiddling his thumbs, burning him.  This has only happened once to me, on a very VERY low FPS fort, though, so it's the safest and easiest method I've used to date.  No messing around with mechanics etc.

I used the method here with much ease and not needing to do any runny dodgy stuff:
http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/03/02/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-11-%E2%80%9Cburning-hot-mag-ma%E2%80%9D/

Though I should mention I messed up a little and used a floodgate and when I got to the point to release the magma from the floodgate the magma started flowin' and apparently blew apart the floodgate as I saw a couple mechanisms float for a bit and disappeared.

I dig out my forge room above the ceiling of the magma (It does require a lot of re-designation after the next block of warm stone is located).
Channel two levels above the magma (one level above your eventual forge room). You can either do the whole room area, or channel every one tile in nine so that all the wall tiles on the forge level are revealed and therefore diggable without cancellations.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Good idear, then I can use the top floor for stockpiles. Thanks!
