Drawbridges.....
« on: June 16, 2013, 08:25:26 pm »

I keep seeing everywhere that it you can design a drawbridge to either retract or lift.  But all my bridges just disappear, which I assume means they retract.  No where, while building them, does there seem to be a choice.  Is there?  Even the wiki talks about retracting vs. lifting (and making it into a wall.
I can see where the latter would be useful.  Can somebody tell me how?  Or is that wrong?

When you press [b]uild-brid[g]e, to the left of um: Change Height, and kh: Change Width, is wadxs: Raise Dir. W-A-D-X is North West East South, and S is Retract.

I already red that part of the wiki and did not understand it.   The first reply made it much more clearer to me.  Thanks.

Yeah, sometimes its easy to miss within mountains of text in the wiki. In the case of bridges however, it's located in the 2nd paragraph:

Building Bridges

Bridges can be built (b -> g) of metal, stone or wood. They are first designed by an architect, then require a specialist worker for the material used (e.g. a mason for a stone bridge). The size of the bridge can be altered with umkh while placing it, up to a maximum size of 10 squares in each direction. The bridge must be anchored to a solid surface on at least one edge. Before placing the bridge ensure that the bridge raises in the direction you want it to using wadx or retracts using s. The direction points to the side of the bridge which will become a wall when the bridge is raised.

Hey I learned something. I never noticed that x can be used to make a bridge raise south-ward. Up to this point I would either set up bridges facing that way as a retracting bridge, or rearrange things to allow for  a e/w/n anchored bridge.
