Destroying a Partial Aquifer
« on: June 17, 2013, 12:13:46 am »

Alright, I have no idea how to explain this, so bear with me.

I'm building a fortress at a 3 way river, where a waterfall splits two ways. My fortress will be behind the waterfall itself. Now, the section between the two lower rivers, I'm going to channel down so it's not some absurdly high little mountain thing. My problem is that ONE of the layers has some aquifer in it. Only 1 layer of it, and it's a small portion of that area overall. I can dig over, as well as under it. My question is, can i drop it like I would a 'plug' and destroy the aquifer layer itself? Or will water just start spurting out of thin air?

My understanding is that the aquifer actually exists within that specific bit of stone. So if you are able to mind out all of the aquifer stone, then there shouldn't be anything to generate more. If your aquifer touches the map edge you will have to use walls there to hold back water.

I haven't tried it but I think that collapsing the aquifer will just cause the water-producing rocks to move down to their new z-level. It might stop the aquifer flag though, I'm not sure.

If it is only a single layer of aquifer, and you want all of it gone, you can channel it. Aquifers produce water in adjacent cells, so if there are no aquifer tiles left, no more water will be produced. I don't know about map edges however, you might run into problems there.

I would love the aquifier to move with the stone. Does anybody know?

Okay, I have the beginings of my fortress made where i want it, and my wagon is empty, so I don't have to worry aout much disaster happening from this. I'm going to try and channel it out nd hope it all just drains into the nearby river while I work.

I mean, worst that could happen is my merchants get washed down river. But they'll send more. They always do.

as long as you know the boundries of the aquafer as long as you channle out all those aquifer tiles from above the hole you make will stop filling when the last one is done.  After that just channle out a drain to dump it into the river or something and you should be in the clear once it dries up.  just be sure to designate 1 strip of the channeling at a time as block designating could lead to stranded miners geting traped on a lone island and then channeling under their feet and droping themselves in the water.  Depending on the fill rate that could lead to a drowning.
