Suggestion: Sneak/Disguise toggle key
« on: September 10, 2013, 10:46:01 am »

The fact that the bigger skill seems to take precedence in most cases is a bit of a problem for my playstyle. You see most of the time no matter who I start the game as (meaning the stats on my founder) my first order of business will be do go into apartments and unlock doors to train my security skill. Than I steal stuff (mainly for the 1 juice a pop and in downtown for cash) also training my stealth skill in the process.

This is all fine and dandy and it works out just fine for me, Within a month my sneak skill is good enough to get into a military armory and sneak out using nothing but a black suit. Neat.

You see the problem comes when I want to actually be disguised somewhere, be it for RP reasons or because I'm also trying to get that skill higher for any followers who might be lacking agility and need something else to cover their butts. But because my sneak skill is already silly, my founder automatically sneaks away from everything, never getting a chance to train his disguise apart from possibly starting a fight and than trying to bluff his way out of the other groups (i'd rather avoid that, it's too risky).

Thus I think a toggle key would be most useful, decide ahead of the time if you want to be sneaking right now or trying to bluff your way through.

It may be that this already exists and I'm a dumbass, it wouldn't be the first time :p

AFAIK, there is no stealth toggle. So I do the next best thing: using an orange jumpsuit (no stealth possible with that, only disguise), do some Liberal activities (spraying a tag works, but you could also get spotted naked by a conservative then getting your jumpsuit back on). Other clothes are impossible to sneak with, but the orange jumpsuit is one of the cheapest to make.

Else, you can equip the SEAL Stealth armor, go to the Garment factory, strip, and re-equip it when you trigger the alarm (it's the only place where being naked don't trigger alarm, but actually is a valid disguise). If your sneak skill is really that good, you'll get away with it easy.

I've encountered this problem too. My workaround is to just wait around the same conservative. Stealth checks get harder and harder, so eventually you'll start failing your stealth checks and rely on disguise. My disguise is usually 4 by this point thanks to University courses, but yeah. That is my advice.

I really like Elodie's suggestions too, I might try those some time.

I do the same thing as Elodie to level up Disguise, namely going around in one of the armors that has ZERO Stealth value. My personal favorites to use for this are the Donkey Suit and Elephant Suit. I show up wearing one of those at a site, steal just 1 item while nobody's looking, then walk back and forth on 2 tiles near the entrance until either my Disguise skill goes up or a Conservative cries out in alarm. Then I leave the site and come back the next day and do the same exact thing all over again. Within a few days, my Disguise skill is maxed out. And nobody knows who did any of this, since the Donkey Suit and Elephant Suit both cover the face. As far as any Conservative observers are concerned, this was all done by an actual donkey or elephant.

So a donkey burst onto the scene of political activism? FinetalPies, don't waste your money on courses. Disguise can be efficiently raised just by going out of town and waiting until they get suspicious and leaving. No crime, but lots of skill gain.

I thought you only gained skill after a successful check. Thus your skills go up faster the better you are at them, kind of. Trying to train something from 0 is the worst.

That is correct. Donkey Suits and Elephant Suits, like Orange Jumpsuits and a couple other types of armor, have zero Stealth value so every Stealth check fails if you're wearing them. But they DO have Disguise value, so you can use them as a Disguise to level up your disguise skill. In order to level up your Disguise skill, you need to have unsuccessful Stealth checks that are followed by successful Disguise checks, and this is most easily achieved using armor that has zero Stealth but does have Disguise ability. Some armors, such as being stark Naked, have zero Disguise along with zero Stealth. So you CAN'T train Disguise by being naked... unless you are at the Sweatshop/Garment Factory, where being Naked is an acceptable disguise, and the zero Disguise of being Naked is overridden at that site.
