Ok I give up: how on earth do you create a patrol route?
« on: March 16, 2011, 12:31:22 am »

I've searched the forums and the wiki both but cannot find any explanation as to how to set up a patrol route.  Can find information on the detriments of patrolling to happiness, and found a bit of a teaser as to it some how involving burrows, but I cannot find the way to connect two burrows together to form a patrol route itself.  What step am I missing here?

I dont think you can. Just get some war dogs and pen/pasture them to the patrol zone, then remove areas that you don't want them patrolling.

So, in the schedule screen for military, the Patrol order option is broken?

You use notes to make patrol routes, not burrows. Using the (N)otes menu, select a particular spot, make a note there, then name it. Repeat this process at every waypoint along your desired patrol route. Then, using the military schedules screen, you select the patrol route order and select the notes in order.

I don't think I'm skipping any steps there, but it's been a couple weeks since I last played, and I never really used the military much, but that's generally how you do it. Once you know that you specify locations for waypoints with the notes cursor instead of burrows, it should be relatively simple to figure out the rest.

Edit: From the wiki, seems I was wrong about the order you do things. You go into the (N)otes screen, set your waypoints, then (from the notes screen) enter the (r)outes submenu, (a)dd a route, and add the waypoints to the route in the order you want them visited. Then, you schedule a patrol along the route.

Is there a faster way to make squads run patrol routes than re-assigning all 12 months manually each time?

create a new alert
change the schedule in your new alert to patrol for all 12 months
control whether they patrol by assign the squad to that alert, or not

Cool, almost there... Have new alert and when I select schedule it brings me to the schedule screen as normal, but I dont see how to link that specific schedule to the alert. Missing some key step I assume...

there's some button on schedule screen to switch to the calendar for your new alert.  i want to say /*, but it should say on the screen.
