Mission failure is fun *new build!*
« on: June 14, 2013, 11:57:29 am »

A friend and I are working on a mars colonization game. DF is a big influence, and I wanted to let you all take a look at an early build:

http://www.selfsamegames.com/mars_base/game.html

'v' key toggles build mode, click to place tiles, 1-8 keys change tile type, and 'b' confirms the build.

Mouse wheel to zoom in/out.

I'll post more builds in the future, critiques and commentary welcome!

Pretty cool. There seems to be less suits than people so two guys always die though.

I seems to always have 3 guys die and 1 suit left cause they dart around cluelessly, hehe.

Seems pretty cool, whats the goals/plans with this?

Yep, not enough suits because I was testing out death.  Also, I think if there is a rock on top of their spacesuit they won't try to put it on.  Perhaps if they don't have a suit and are about to die, they can ask for someone to come help by sharing their oxygen.

In the near future we will add doors/airlocks, and some sort of resource system.  I suspect that generating oxygen, water, and food will be the first in game goals.

My friend came up with the game idea, he was inspired by dungeon keeper/evil genius (I could never convince him to try DF)  Hopefully we'll come up with some unique ideas on gameplay, but so far I've been pretty happy implementing some basic features of DF.

Sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out when I have more time.

Posting to watch. You can keep the suitless alive if you can build fast enough :D

PTW

It's nice to see a game that:
a) is not a blatant DF clone like many many manyyy of the other projects on here
b) actually looks good
and
c) looks like it's already had a good amount of work put into it

hooray! :D

Isn't this a bit early to ask for critiques? I do like the Rover though and the tracks everyone leaves behind.

Anyhow will there be aliens?

Hey all!

There is a new build up: http://www.selfsamegames.com/mars_base/game.html

NOTE: In Firefox (and probably all non webkit browsers) this is running a bit slow, and has some graphics jitter in the background

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

New features:

dmills has put alot of work into build mode, along with a new tileset for the walls.

Colonists can place objects, including the ever important 'doors'

Graphical menus

Colonists are semi competent, they tend to hang out indoors, and shouldn't mess up any jobs or get lost and asphyxiate.

Neither of us are exactly sure where this game is headed, but so far it's been a blast to work on.  I've started to get very interested in AI of the colonists, a lot of things I've tried didn't quite work out, but now they have a pretty solid state machine, and as we add more behavior states, a whole range of complex activity should open up.

The next build should feature oxygen dispersal inside of rooms, as well as a few strategies for generating it.

I had a worker on the corner of a door cycling through job_pickup, idle and wait.

That debug function's really cool btw :D

For me, building is now super difficult. I cant seem to de-designate a new building tile, and when I hit remove, it only deletes a random 50% of the tiles.

That's been fixed ;)
