(Warning, kind of a ramble on my part.)

Was fired from my High School because he faked his degree from Columbia. How the fuck the got away with it over the years is beyond me, honestly.

So, I got two questions, I guess.


1: How the hell do you fake a degree from Columbia without getting caught for ten years (Seriously, do people even check that stuff?)?

2: What does it say about the Massachusetts School System that the ONLY decent teacher I had in High School wasn't even a real teacher?

1: If it's not checked at first, it's not likely to come up again soon. All it takes is the recruiter being lazy and not checking it, (and your degree isn't really relevant for school-level teaching), and one can easily coast for years.

2: Why do you say he wasn't a real teacher? By your own admission, he did a lot better than the others.

The question now, I suppose, is 'is he ging to get his teaching degree now?'

I think in this situation a vote of his former students and their later teachers on the subject is in order on that matter. I'm all for giving credentials based on merit.

You can't really make a good comment on this without knowing the details. He may well have gone to the university, completed all his coursework, but failed a course without realizing it, walked for graduation, and never officially received the degree in the mail. Or he may have gone to another university and trumped up his resume with a degree from elsewhere. Or he may have entirely made up everything. There's obviously a HUGE difference between those.

RIT, for example, has a 3 quarter work experience requirement for our program's BS degree. I've had 1 quarter of experience, and completed all the coursework I need to graduate. I walked for graduation last month, and am currently applying for jobs which require a BS degree. Technically I don't have one, and won't have one until I work for them for about 5 months. But so long as I make sure the companies know that, it doesn't really matter simply because the degree itself is little more than formality at this point.

Unless he carefully checked his transcripts, it could well be he simply missed some simple requirement to graduate, even something as simple as skipping one too many PE classes. So, again, circumstances matter a lot in this case; even more so than the actual issue itself [not having the degree].

Reminds me of the story of that pilot who flew large commercial airplanes for a good 20 years without license. (He had a license for small crafts, but not for the large passenger craft he was flying with)

Here's a different dude who flew over 1,000,000 miles free by pretending to be a pilot, was a Doctor for 11 months, an Attourney for 8 months, Escaped from a plane as it was landing after he got extradited to the US, escaped from prison pretending to be an undercover inspector, then impersonated an FBI agent to evade capture yet again, served a total of 5 years in prison, and now has a company dedicated to stopping fraud and general security. He's basically my hero.

Seeing as for part of my job I teach teachers how to be teachers, I have a fair old bit of knowledge on the subject. Basically, to teach someone how to teach, you stick them in a classroom to teach - the old sink or swim method. So, yea if this guy had been doing it for ten years, well, practice makes perfect.
