Questions about possible adds on my computer
« on: June 02, 2013, 09:24:30 am »

I have noticed lately that on forums I visit that sometimes words are linked to adds and the words aren't in any way important to the post.

Like I would be reading and mouse over the word "and" for no reason it would be linked to some add crap.

Is this my laptop or is it some kind of new add campaign that is all the rage for forum owners?

Yes a lot of these have been on THIS forum itself.

So if anyone might notice this and or know things about malware and how it works I could use the advice.

I mostly frequent Wurm, Dwarf fortress, Hazeron, Castlestory and congregate, stuff like that.

Thanks for any help or whatever.

I can definitely say that I don't see any ads here in this forum if I turn off AdBlock. You might have a malware problem. Try checking your laptop with Spybot - Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware.

If you are using Internet Explorer you could have some toolbar or plugin pushing these ads.  Can happen in other browsers too but most toolbar or plugin extras from installers are designed for IE only.

Try downloading Chrome or Firefox and install Adblock Plus.

I have this problem on Chrome on my desktop and not on my laptop. My laptop is historically more prone to viruses, is used more, and shouldn't have adblock... I don't think it does. I never put it on.

It's some kind of software, process, or something I feel quite sure. Check your processes for strange entries and if you don't know what somehting is, google it.

Right I had that old game called vampires masqarade redemption loading from the internet.

This was AFTER the ads apeared in my forums for a few days already.

The download did not finish I came home to the windows dreaded blue screen of death.

I think I need to get more virus block if I am going to download free stuff.

Snatching the battery out of an alienware laptop won't kill it right?

Cause it won't turn off with the off button, that button is always more of a suggestion for computers these days.

You definitely should check your PC with Malwarebytes. It's pretty good at finding adware.

Thanks for the links.

I read about different browsers and operating systems yesterday.

I think firefox looks neat and if I was gonna switch that then I was planning on also switching to linux or something like that.

I read that windows dosen't always work without IE so I was thinking if I switched to another browser I might as well switch operating systems too.

Can I switch on Op sestem using partitions, cause my CD tray thing won't take CDs for some reason.

^Computers like to break so I can't play them, they have a union. >:(

IE isn't a requirement for an OS. Now, there are a few things that require IE- the only thing I can even remotely think of is Ghost Recon Online, though.

You definitely have malware. Sounds like a toolbar you accidentally allowed a program to install during an install of a program. A lot of free programs try to pull that one on you, and I've had a few that try to get you to install two or three toolbars at once.

You do not need a new OS, but I do suggest a different browser. Firefox is probably the most secure, Chrome has some really good extensions. While AdBlock may fix your problem, I think you should get to the root of the cause rather than glossing over its symptoms by rummaging around with HijackThis or various malware detection programs.

Windows only has problems if you completely deactivate (uninstall) IE. You don't have to do that to use another browser for everything.

I've preffered Chrome over FF, but that may just be preference.
